Special Ops Survival Mode Preview
Activison showed off Modern Warfare 3 Special Ops at E3 and here's a hands-on preview.
E3 has passed and while the multiplayer mode wasn't discussed or shown, they did give a demo of two Single Player missions as well as a Special Ops level.
Special Ops first appeared in the series with Modern Warfare 2 and the co-op mode returns with new features that were announced a few weeks ago.
While there isn't any footage of Spec Ops just set, footage is believed to be just around the corner according to a recent GameTrailers interview. In the meantime however, Joystiq have posted a pretty in-depth article about their hands-on experience of the Survival mode in Spec Ops.
Special Ops will have both objective-based levels and survival-based levels, with the latter being set on any multiplayer. The survival level that Joystiq played on with an Activision teammate was called Dome. What happens in the survival mode? Well just like any survival mode, waves of enemies will appear and you have to continuously take each and every one of them out in order to stay alive as long as possible. You can play online with a friend or via split screen local, or if your a lone-wolf then there's also a solo option for you.
In the match you will earn virtual money for completing certain tasks, such as killing enemies, reviving your teammate or other various actions. You can purchase things with the money by using the gun store, an equipment store, or an air support store. The gun store contains, well uh, guns of course, but you can also upgrade them guns to add various sights or add-ons, as well as to replenish your ammo. In the equipment store you can buy things like frag grenades, trip-mines, turrets and C4. The air support store allows you to buy various air supports attacks, including something called "Delta Squad" which sends you a group of four AI soldiers whom act as your allies until they die. While full details of the level progression system is still quite secretive, one of the highest level rewards was "Riot Shield Squad" which sends riot shield officers to help you instead of normal soldiers.
The enemies start off with just shotguns while you begin with a pistol, although you're more than welcome to pick up a shotgun off the ground once an enemy has been neutralised. Joystiq note that it gets harder as the waves go on and there were two assault helicopters at around wave 5. The further you go on you'll spot soldiers equipped with C4 that explodes when they die, and the same also happens to the not so friendly dogs. And if that doesn't get you scared, then maybe the fact that the infamous Juggernauts return will.
You'll earn more money to purchase items if you do well across waves; this includes getting headshots, rocking a solid accuracy rating, and taking less damage. The Survival mode also includes two onscreen challenge meters that you have to try and fill. You'll be rewarded with extra cash and an actual visual explosion of dollar bills if you complete the Rampage challenge which involves killing a bunch of enemies in a row. The reward goes up once you've filled up a meter by pulling off Rampages, but it will slowly drain out if you don't pull it off.. Another example is the Kill Steak challenge which involves killing multiple enemies without being damaged.
Onto the co-op side of things, you'll be able to share money with your partner if they're in need for some extra cash. As with Modern Warfare 2 Spec Ops, you'll be able to revive downed teammates and they can also press a button to summon you. There will be a few difficulty levels that you can play with, but not much more info is known about that just yet. Another thing being kept secret is an armor value at the bottom of the screen. According to Joystiq it started at 100 but decreased when the player was shot.
So there you have it! Special Ops sounds much more bigger and entertaining each time. With matchmaking, dogs that explode, a progressive ranking system, a survival mode, and so much more, we think fans are going to love this new and improved mode.
