You don't, I have an HD PVR, and if you're running windows, you get the recording software, but if you're on Mac, you have to buy (or torrent) a program called Eye Tv.

And really, it depends what you're gonna record. I record HD gameplay to commentate. I was about the 4th person to get an HD PVR in the sniping scene..

Before the PVR I had a Dazzle Platinum DVC 100, and I also run the PVR on Windows Vista before I got my iMac, which is running OS X 10.6.2
