Im pretty sure its because your mind cant comprehend the concept of death.

Once, I had a dream where i was 600 feet underwater and I was trying to swim up to the surface. I continued to swim up and up, but I wasn't getting really close.


The weird thing about this is while I was holding my breath underwater in my dream, I was actually holding my breath in real life.


Right when I was about to die in my dream from lack of air and suffocation, I woke up.


When I woke up, I was COMPLETELY out of breath. I'm not even kidding.

That's true. One of my friends was telling me about it. If you die in your dreams you die in real life because your body can't comprehend dying in a dream so it shuts itself down in real life. There's a word he used for it that I can't remember; but there actually is a term used for that exact phenomenon.
