Probably one of the more strange cases heard in Jewish court was heard recently when paranoid judges sentenced a stray dog to death by stoning. The poor pooch was believed to be possessed by the spirit of an ex-lawyer who judges did not like due to his unruly behaviour in court some twenty years ago. The dog originally came to the attention of the Monetary Affairs Court in the ultra-Orthodox Jewish neighbourhood of Mea Shearim in Jerusalem when it innocently wandered into the court off the street.
Apparently then the dog started to terrorise the judges and plaintiffs and then refused to leave the court, which is what caused the theory that the dog was in fact the reincarnation of the unruly lawyer who had insulted the court all those years ago. The lawyer who had angered a judge back then with his behaviour was cursed so that he would come back in another life as a dog. For some that might not be so bad, however in canines are considered impure by traditional Judaism so to come back as one would not be good. Which is why the court saw fit to sentence the poor pooch to death because it came back to haunt the court and order the penalty be carried out by local children. <-- notice children are going to have to stone the dog! :O
According to local website Ynet Let the Animals Live, an animal welfare organisation, had filed a complaint with the police against the head of the court, Rabbi Avraham Dov Levin. However as it turned out the little doggy managed to escape and got away with his apparent crime, whatever that was!
