thanks man, i'm just starting out so this will help me loaaaaads. i did put a couple of lights in, but i havent quite got the hang of it.

Yeah lights will light up the image.

But things you want to focus on are placing planes properly to create a good scene to work with.

And global illumination settings are key with lighting.

So look at a few tutorials for lighting and it will help out with everything else you create from now on.
