When I try hotswap, nothing happens on the WaW background image and it says "Open Tray" on the dash. As an alternate, could I install the modded disc to my HDD from a flashed xbox, then move the HDD to my retail and host? Would this work?

No you could not. Can only play from the console it was installed on.
