lucid dreaming
-verb
    1. Lucid dreaming is a dreaming in which you know you are dreaming. Typically this happens when the dreamer experiences something strange, and when they stop to question their reality, they realize they are in a dream. Lucid dreams happen naturally on occasion, although some people may have them naturally more often than others. The definition of lucid dreaming may be simple, but there are a lot of misconceptions surrounding it.

Getting started:

Some people say that some food or meditation or sleeping with a quartz rock under your pillow will induce lucid dreaming. ALthough it may be possible, it has been proven that there's one of the quickest way for someone to begin lucid dreaming on te first attempt.

    1. Lay down to go to sleep. (works best if you are extremely tired.)
    2. Lay on your back with your arms at your side and eyes closed.
    3. STAY PERFECTLY STILL. You must stay awake.
    4. Your brain will send signals to your body to see if you're ready to sleep. Signals will include getting an itch, changing your body position, wanting to blink or move your eyeballs (remember your eyes should be closed). YOU MUST IGNORE ALL OF THESE IMPULSES. You may even hear weird noises.
You are now in sleep paralysis. If you open your eyes, you will begin to hallucinate (dreaming with your eyes open) and you will not be able to move your body. Your body is completely aslee. Now that you are aware you are dreaming, you can shut your eyes and begin to dream instantly. You will be fully aware you are dreaming and can now (with some practice) control your dreams.

Now that you are lucid dreaming there are a few tricks to:

    1. check to see if you are dreaming
    2. stay dreaming while fully aware you are dreaming

You can do a few things in a dream to test and see if you are dreaming.

You can flip a light switch. Flipping a light switch will never turn on a light. Most of the times it does nothing.
Another thing to do is look in a mirror. You will never see yourself.

Once you have done this, you have confirmed you are dreaming, and now have control over your dreams.

When you realize you are dreaming, you mind will try to wake up.

The best method to stay asleep and dreaming is to spin in a circle (in your dream). This part of the brain will take all of the attention away from waking up and now you will be into a deep sleep.

Additional Lucid Dreaming Reality Checks

1.) The Common Sense Test: This is the first and most obvious check. Examine your surroundings for anything that logically should not be there. Ask if this could happen in your normal life. Look for inconsistencies. Are you somewhere you have never been before? Are you with people who live on the other side of the country? Is there an elephant in your kitchen? These are the kinds of questions that can spark your lucidity.

2.) The Reading Check: This is one of the most effective checks. Simply look around and find something to read. After reading it, look away and then look back again to reread it. Do this several times. If you are dreaming, the text or numbers will usually change after several glances. It may become garbled or may have changed completely or it will not remain stable while you are reading it. Anything containing words or numbers will work: a book, a street sign, an address. Many people use the dial on their dream watch.

3.) the Flying or Levitation Check: This is another very effective check. See if you are able to fly. If you are not able to fly, try to levitate or hover slightly above the ground. As you become more skilled at lucid dreaming, this may become your favorite check as it is mine. The only down side is that at times you may try this and be unable to fly or levitate, yet you still may be dreaming. Always remember to use this in combination with other checks unless of course it works, which in most cases it will.

4.) The Light Switch Check: This is usually a quite reliable check. Find a light switch and turn it on and off. If it malfunctions then the odds are you are dreaming. Try it several times and pay close attention to when it should be on and when it should be off. It usually will not take long before it malfunctions or operates correctly while in the wrong position.

5.) The Memory Check: This is a very effective but largely unknown method. Simply backtrack in your mind where you have just come from and what you have been doing. Keep thinking back as far as you can and eventually you may find that there are inconsistencies in your memory. By backtracking your dream memory, you may also become aware of something illogical that has happened which you overlooked at the time. You also may find that you have an amnesia-like block that prevents you from remembering accurately. In all of these cases, you can safely assume that you are dreaming.

6.) The Mirror Check: This is not only an extremely effective method but as an added bonus, it usually results in quite a remarkable experience. Find a mirror and while gazing at yourself, ask if you are dreaming. You may become startled by your reflection. You may be younger or older or have different hairstyle and hair color or you may even be someone different entirely.

7.) The Self Observation Test: This is also a very useful check. Just take a look at yourself. Examine your hands, arms, legs, and clothing. Usually you will immediately be tipped off that are dreaming because you will be wearing clothes that you do not own. Other times, simply looking at your dream body will spark your lucidity.

8.) The Penetration of Matter Check: This is not the most reliable method but it has helped me on many occasions. Simply try to push your finger through something solid like a wall or a door or a glass. At first, it may not work but if you believe that you can do it, you eventually will be able to pass your finger right through any solid. As an added bonus on this check, you are also developing your ability to allow your beliefs to directly influence your experience.

9.) The Gravity Check: This is a somewhat reliable check. Find something that you can throw into the air and catch safely. Start tossing it up and down and you may just find that it isn't obeying the laws of gravity as it should if you were in "reality". To maximize the success of this check, while tossing it into the air try to effect the object's rise and fall with your mind.

10.) The Questioning of Dream Characters Check: This may not be the best thing to try while awake but sometimes it can be effective if in fact you are dreaming. In "reality" if you asked people if we were in a dream, their response would be to accuse you of being insane, yet in the dream realm, it is sometimes a different matter. Usually the dream characters will deny that it is a dream, but they deny it with an air of denial. They usually never question your sanity, and in some cases, they don't even understand what you are saying and disregard you entirely. Also, on rare occasions, someone in your dream will admit that it is in fact a dream.

Lucid Dreaming FAQ
1.1. What is Lucid Dreaming?

Lucid Dreaming is knowing that you are dreaming while you are doing it. When you know that you are dreaming, you can also alter the dream course. And with practice you can also develop full control over your dream, you will be able to create and change the environment and change your own appearance. It will be you that are in control of the dream scenario. You can do whatever you want to do. Live out your wildest fantasy, or just sit down and chit chat with someone. You should also be open for the possibility to share dreams and travel in time and space when you develop adequate control over your dreams. The word Lucid means that you have a clear and full consciousness. And believe me when I say that Lucid Dreaming can be much more fun than waking reality.

1.2. In what stage of sleep does Lucid Dreaming occur?

Lucid Dreaming usually takes place in REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep. There are five stages of sleep. Stage 1 being the one you first enter, then followed by stage 2, 3 and 4. As you descend into deeper sleep your brain frequency slows down. In stage 4 can it be slower than one cycle per second (delta sleep). After some time spent in stage 4, about 25 minutes, you return to stage 3 and 2, then straight into REM sleep. About 90 minutes has passed now since you started sleeping. 5-10 minutes is spent in this stage before you go all the way down to stage 4 again (also called non-REM sleep). When approximately 90 minutes have again passed, another REM-period start. This time the REM sleep lasts longer. And as time progresses less time in non-REM sleep is needed and more time is spent in REM sleep. After 4-5 hours you don't go lower than stage 2. Vivid dreaming takes place in REM sleep, so the more you sleep, the more time is spent in REM and the more likely it is that you may have a Lucid Dream.

1.3. Does Lucid Dreaming interfere with normal sleep?

No. The only difference is that you are aware that you are dreaming. Unless you have some sort of sleep disorder that causes you to get less delta sleep, but then again, it's not the LD's fault. There is no danger with Lucid Dreaming. But if you have a bad hearth you might have a hearth attack if you crash a car, or during sexual intercourse. Other than that Lucid Dreaming is one of the safest activities I can think of. It can even be used for healing...

1.4. What purposes can Lucid Dreaming serve?

Those are so many. First of all, it is lots of fun. You can do whatever you feel like, without putting yourself in danger, or spending a lot of money on journeys or expensive equipment. It is great for therapy if you have any psychological problems. If you have a fear of spiders, that fear can be conquered through Lucid Dreaming. You know you are totally safe in a Lucid Dream. So you carefully begin with tiny spiders far away, and as you get used to them, you might let them go closer and make them bigger. If there is something you want to get better at, like Tennis or Snowboarding, then Lucid Dreaming can improve your skill. Lucid Dreaming can be extremely powerful for motor skill enhancement. This is not only true because of the vividness of the imagery, but also because the physiological nature of REM sleep is ideal for establishing neural pattern without actual movement. Experiments also show that you can get physically stronger with mental training. Lucid Dreaming can be used for healing if you have any illness. If you wish to have your subconscious read at a rate of 1 million words per minute, you can activate that in a Lucid Dream to gain conscious awareness over the knowledge. You can meet the author of the book you just read in a Lucid Dream, and ask questions you are seeking answers for in the book. Or you can sit down and watch the whole novel on a big screen TV with cinema 3D sound. You can use Lucid Dreaming for solving a complex and difficult problem, like mathematical problems. You can share a dream with a friend. Or even a whole group of people. So you can hang out with your friends when you are sleeping too, not only when you are awake. It is also great being a group of people trying to Lucid Dream. If you find your friends in a dream, you can tell them that they are dreaming. This way can you help your friends gaining Lucidity, and they might cause you to gain Lucidity if they find you. If you have full conscious control over a dream can you also use it to travel in time. You can explore the future. Even shared precognitive dreaming is possible. With a little practice can you also use Lucid Dreaming to leave your body and explore the world. By doing this you can also meet other spirits and travel in time.

1.5. Can anyone learn Lucid Dreaming?

Yes. Just like everyone dream, virtually anyone can learn to be aware that they are dreaming. How long it takes for you to learn Lucid Dreaming depends on how good your dream recall is, how motivated you are and what techniques you are using. And how many hours you sleep each night. Hopefully techniques and devices will be developed so that you may have your first Lucid Dreaming within a few nights. A few techniques and devices have already given results in such short time. But there is always room for improvement. In order to Lucid Dream you should have good dream recall.

1.6. What should I do once I'm Lucid?

Absolutely nothing at first. You might want to try to find out how conscious you are, make sure that the logical part of your brain is functioning and that all your senses are working. You need to remember your intent, do some math tasks, recall a few things from your life, what time it is, what date it is, where you are and stuff like that. Look around you and observe things. Don't feel like you are in a hurry and need to get things done before the Dream fades. Also make sure that you are in a dream, not in hypnagogic imagery. All your senses should be working including tactile feelings. I want to emphasize that you make sure that your logical abilities are working. Not only do they create your consciousness, they can also create the most splendid dreams you could ever imagine. Once you are satisfied with your logical abilities you can cut loose and start controlling the dream.

No questions...
But can I ask why everyone is suddenly so into Lucid Dreaming? I've known about it but why do people find it so interesting now?
