Yeah the background was an experiment, and I guess it didn't go too well :/ The next one I make will have less glow. Also, are there any tutorials on the gradient overlay? Thank you for the feedback and I will definitely keep on practicing!

No problem! The background wasn't actually, it just didn't go with the overall theme of the image. And for the gradient overlay, just right click on the layer that you want the gradient overlay to be on, and click on "Gradient Overlay". Next, choose the gradient that is flowing from white to black, I'm pretty sure that the white to black gradient is a preset. Now just play around with the scale and opacity of the gradient until you find a setting that you like. That's basically it.

Try and change the the gradient angle to where the white is at the top flowing into black at the bottom. Also, it's needs something in the background so it doesn't look so plain. All in all that the looks much better in my opinion!
