The best way to start is YouTube, it is free and it is very informative. Another way is to use books from your local library, you can never go wrong with that. (Just check the dates on the books)

For application programming you can use Java, C, C++, VB, etc. If you want to make basic applications like web browsers and text editors and such, I would suggest you use VB (Visual Basic). It is good for simple designs, but not for more complicated things. If you would like to move onto more complicated concepts eventually (databases, online communication, chat rooms, image editing, video game programming) then I suggest you start with Java and advance to C++.
For web development you need to have a good understanding of html and CSS (the visual aspect) then if you want to enhance the visual aspect learn JavaScript (totally different from Java). If you want to work with the logic aspect of the website the learn php.
In your last post you said mobile development (ipod, android, etc) then you will need to learn Objective-C for ipod. Java for android. Or C# for Windows Mobile
IMPORTANT!
If you want to develop for ipod, ipad, etc. and post it to the apple store then you need to pay $100 per month (when I last checked) to publish your games and get all the developer resources.
If you want to develop for android then you need to know Java (as stated before). You will need to have a good grasp of the language before you start developing. You will need to pay $25 (not sure if it is one time or other) to get the developer license from google. This will allow you to publish your android games to the android store. You will need a gmail account. Only need to pay to publish!
For windows mobile I believe it is free, because you can put the .cab file onto the memory card, or send it by email and run it off of the phone. Windows mobile is pretty much a simpler hand-held PC. I made mine dual boot to android.
Anyway it is up to you which you want to start learning. There are so many, and each of them have a different purpose. it is your choice to see which one you like best, and which one suits what you would like to design.
As the previous poster that replied to your post use books and online sources like [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] to help you in your learning. only use youtube as a reference. Make sure it is not your main way of learning!
Hope I have provided enough information. If you have any questions feel free to ask.
