do i need the whole game installed on my 360 to run a patch i figure im probly an idiot for asking but still im wondering. i would also like to note that this would be without the game in the xbox 360 game drive

Well you do need the Full Game Install okay
and on a Jtag once its installed you could Just Play it of the Hard Drive/ Usb

Get the game you want put it in the disc drive and open xex menu then install to your HDD like everyone else on this planet that has a Tag then go from there!!

While its easier to just simply copy the entire disc directly to your box via XeXMenu or FSD....you actually DON'T need all the files to host a system link lobby.
You can remove single player files (default.xex for example) to decreae the overall file size. You can actually remove all the maps if you would like (except for one) and get rid of some of the MP size as well.
This use to be really convenient when hosting lobbies prior to the fall update that killed XBL access for JTAGs. Didn't need a HDD to be able to host...simply a USB stick with about 4GB of space.

You have to install the game in order to run a fastfile.
