when my friend copies the gamesave for borderlands onto a flash drive then puts it into the computer and loads willow tree it doesnt say theres anything on the flash drive? anyone know why this is?

You need to extract the save from the flash drive using a Xbox USB explorer, I use Modio but there are other options such as XTAF USB xplorer. Give those a try, open up the folders until you find the borderlands folder and inside that should be the save, drag it to the desktop and open it on willow tree from there. When you finish modding, put it back on the USB in the same place you found it.
