I'm not gonna lie, that kind of sucks...
If you want to build a really good house, use a more visually enticing block, like cobblestone. However, I recommend a texture pack, as the normal cobblestone just looks like a bundle of lines. Cobblestone is also stronger than dirt. Another thing, I wouldn't recommend wood for your house, as it's very flammable.

I would suggest upgrading to a larger house made out of a stone material, dirt isn't that good when it comes to creeper protection.
Also fill out the edges of your little pond and it will make an infinite water source.
I see you also have pistons and stuff, where is your mine located?

You could also make an underground mine near you house for ores and what not, plus if you are new to the game i recommend putting the difficulty on 'Peaceful' it helps
