I bought a 1.5 terabyte external hard-drive from bestbuy a few months back. It was 70$ on sale. Usually 1 terabyte is 80$ but they included an extra .5 for 10$ cheaper. I use this thing for everything. All you do is plug it in an outlet, and the usb in your computer (It holds quite a bit of power). Every big file you download (like programs) should be saved there. I have Adobe after effects cs5, sony vegas po 10, photoshop, pinnacle studio, fraps, camtasia, skype, gimp, itunes, and all my steam games saved to it. The only programs I have on my computer is my anti-virus. The good thing about this, is that if your computer ever does crash and you loose everything, you didn't. All your major files and programs will be on that hardrive for safe keeping. It's also pretty compact. It looks like a speaker, 7 inches tall, 2 inches wide. Very small and travel worthy. I just stick it next to my computer under my desk. It also has a fan on it, a power button, manual file reset (small though, have to use a pin), and a blue LED for on & off signals. I reccomend you buy one, if you have a pvr or dazzle this is perfect. All your footage doesnt have to take all your memory on your computer.

If you want to REALLY save money, buy a bare drive and put it in an enclosure yourself. It's really easy and you get better features, warranty, and expandability.

Look at the last link I posted. You put the drive in an enclosure of your choice.

Full size external drives like this are not portable since they need the DC converter power source plugged in and they are not as resistant to shock as smaller 2.5 inch notebook drives. The smaller drive enclosures also do not require being plugged in since they draw enough from the USB connection. You'd be much better off getting a 2.5 inch drive like this:
