Ireland and the UK continue on high alert this weekend as the remnant storm of Hurricane Katia is set to bring damaging storm force winds with hurricane gusts to northern and western parts late Sunday and Monday.

Katia remains a Category 1 hurricane this evening, located around 450 miles (700 km) north of Bermuda. Maximum sustained winds are 75 knots (85 mph, 170 km/hr), with higher gusts. It is accelerating northeastwards as it gets caught up in the upper flow and will race across the Atlantic over the next 48 hours. It will transition to an extra-tropical storm over the next 24 hours as it moves over increasingly cooler seas and encounters the 140-knot jet stream.

Winds of 70 miles an hour and sea swells of up to 15 metres look set to hit the UK and Ireland next week when the remnants of Hurricane Katia is expected to hit the countries' coast.

Tropical storm Katia has developed into a category one hurricane during Friday morning. Since its formation on August 29 as a tropical depression it has made its way to within 200 miles of the eastern coast of the US.
However it has suddenly changed direction out in the Atlantic and moving at pace towards Scotland. Katia currently has sustained wind speeds of around 85mph with gusts up to 110mph. Its projected path, which suddenly changed from a westerly heading to a north-easterly, puts it on a direct path with Scotland. The hurricane will lose some intensity as it heads over slightly cooler waters of the North Atlantic ocean but will still be packing strong winds and heavy rain.
Hurricane Katia's path will see it continue to blow severe gales in excess of 85mph until its close proximity to Scotland at the beginning of the week.
The severe gales expected during Monday morning could see sustained winds of around 65mph and all areas of Ireland and the UK can expect to see some of the force of Katia. The projected path could still be amended in the next day or so and the Met Office in London has issued a yellow alert at this stage. On Friday morning the warning said:

Hurricane Katia heads for the UK

Severe gales and flooding are expected to hit parts of the UK as Hurricane Katia makes its way across the Atlantic.

Winds of up to 70 miles an hour are predicted to hit north-west Scotland by Monday, with Northern Ireland, north Wales and northern England also likely to be affected.

Forecasters said the predicted winds could coincide with high tides, and western coasts ,in particular, are at risk of localised flooding.

Katia is the second major hurricane of the 2011 Atlantic hurricane season. At its peak, it was rated as category four on the Saffir-Simpson scale. The scale rates hurricanes from one to five, with five being the strongest.
