you can't mod your disc drive with a usb.
You do Need to open the xbox to do so.

You will need a torx 16 screwdriver along with other torx sizes that i can't remember at the moment and a philips screwdriver.

um torx 16? wtf. its actually a torx 10 for all the screws to take it apart and a torx 8 to unscrew the xclamp. i repair xboxes. to clean the fans you can just use a can of compressed air (air duster) and clean it out from the back. Yes you need a modded disc to play zombies. Im pretty damn sure you cant flash it with a usb buddy

If you have a Ben-Q drive, you can hotswap without opening your xbox, and its safer for your game discs.

You need to have a modded .iso disk of the game which requires.

--> A DVD-DL burner (most newer laptops have them)
--> a DVD-R DL (Dual Layer DVD holds 8gb)
--> and a whole spiel of programs.
--> + Knowledge on how to extract and inject patch.ff , common.ff, and default.xex.

For flashing, as far as I know right now, there is no way to do it that you won't get banned. =[

OMGzzz n00b5. If it has RROD and your trying to flash, you definitely need to open it. Or just send it back for warranty and flash the new one... Thats the best option in my opinion =)
