For those of you in the dark, GAMEFest is a UK based video game and technology showcase hosted by the international organisation Game, spanning the 16th to the 18th of September 2011. Located in Birmingham, England, GAMEFest secured the following booths

With a turnout like this, we at TheTechGame couldn't let the opportunity slip by unattended! So with handycams packed we set out at an ungodly hour to catch a flight to Birmingham in the hopes of rallying round the stalls, getting to grips with some as of yet unreleased games, and grabbing some pictures for you lot on the way. That said, the various game/technology developers had a slightly different idea (anybody found capturing video or pictures of their new gear would firstly have to show them the footage being deleted, and then be escorted out of their booth). So did we bend over, put our cameras away and respect the nice developers? Gods no - through some sneaking about and the use of phone cams we did manage to grab a few shots; just don't break our necks for the quality - a lot of these shots were taken very quickly without the ability to actually look at what we were capturing!

Anyways, without further ado, here's our take on GAMEFest 2011.

An overview of the event
Housed in the NEC, GAMEFest certainly had room to accommodate the many stalls that were present. It was well organised and attendees could tell from the oust that security was a priority, as each booth was walled off and exhibitors were only permitting 10-20 people in at a time so each person could be watched for any potential theft (which wasn't really an issue, considering the consoles were caged off), or more importantly filming/photography. Here's a walk around video of the event, followed by some pictures to build up the scene.

Obviously some of the booths attracted us more than others, so with cameras well and truly hidden from sight we snuck on in and got you as much as possible!

Activision
Security on photographic equipment was tighter than Hippie with site badges at the Activision plot, so we pressed our phones to our ears (looking like we were on a call) and snapped everything we could. Mostly we got carpets, walls or uncle Frank. But we did manage to capture a few gems - come and check them out. MW3 multiplayer was being demo'd in a LAN circle while an 100 inch titan TV displayed the game intro video, and Special Ops 2 players were being carried out to the other side of the plot. Something to note which was very cool; zombies fans will not be too put out as MW3 includes a Specials Ops mode where players team up to battle waves of human enemy insurgents - players must survive for as many rounds as possible while utilising upgrade laptop points (not a box in sight) for weapons, armor and special attacks. Go on, admit it, you guys are jealous!

Bethesda
Skyrim looked truly epic in size and scope, but what really blew our minds was Rage which graphically looks just outstanding. To put it in context, the game looked so sexy we considered buying it dinner and a movie in the hopes that things might just get to that 'next level'. Prey 2 also looked real enough to lift a leg and step into the screen - we're not sure whats been happening over at Bathesda's graphical development department but their employees are most definitely bucking for early retirement!

Turtle Beach
The new upcoming Turtle Beach XP500 looked like an audio powerhouse sitting in its glass cube (we only wondered if a cage would drop down on anybody brave enough to touch it). According to the reps the headset should be out for sale in the next few months pending any further marketing delays. The technology itself is akin to that of the PX5 except it also includes an adaptor which allows for use on both 360 and PS3.

Ubisoft
Ghost Recon's graphics and audio accompaniment isnt going to lift any benchmarks but the game itself is very, very fun. Utilising advanced weapons technology in combination with actually intelligent AI/team work allows users to progress through the games levels. What really impressed us at TheTechGame was the Kinect features' SmartGun/GunSmith which allows the player to build guns from their components and play the game while looking like Tom Cruise in Minority Report (as he sifts through his virtual 3D displays). Ghost Recon development also informed us that pending no further delays the game should be available in March of 2012. The new instalment of Assassins Creed brings us more of the same but with some fancy new weapons and further development in the 'brotherhood' idea where you can build up groups to aid with the larger hits.

Very detailed post about Gamefest

I also heard that you waited in line for 2 hours just to play on MW3 for 15 minutes.

Was it worth the wait? Im guessing so 8)
