Because of the terrible track quality of rap music, a budget of $150 is way overkill. It's a bit ridiculous to listen to poorly mastered music with expensive headphones. I'd shoot for about half of that or $100 as a stretch.
Full-size: Sony XB700. The XB series is the go-to for budget bass cans. If you can wait for the XB1000s, that would be great too. They are very expensive and rare right now since they are being imported from Japan, but eventually they will be released here at a reasonable price.
On-ear: Koss Portapro. It's almost impossible to beat these under $100. They're bassy enough, too.
IEMs: Klipsch Image S4. Very bassy, good overall quality. Good choice for rap. Comply foam tips will compliment these well, too. Monster Turbines (Copper or even Gold if you want better quality at a price) are also a good choice here. The Lil' Jamz are decent and indestructible, too. I still recommend avoiding Monster as a company at all costs outside of their IEMs. The Meelectronics and Brainwavz line should also be on your radar. They cover a wide price range.

Greetings friends,
Firstly, you do have a preference, whether you know it or not. As a first step, I would recommend that you try a variety of phones, both in-ear and full-sized. If you insist on not trying before a commitment is made, then I have a few choices lined up. Honestly, for your price range, the [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] is pretty much the best IEM for your music. As we step up into the full-sized headphones class, your choice is either closed headphones or closed headphones. Open headphones will leak sound and and you will lose your ever-important bass. You will be wanting something like the Sony XB (X-tra Bass) line of over ears, specifically the [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] . Another possibility would be the Ultrasone [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] . These are within your price range, have the bass necessary for rap, but also are capable at other genres as well.
Happy hunting,
Zim

ITunes. That's what's bad. They're also very expensive compared to others and sound quality is not the best. I'd take a look at Cowon or Iriver.
If you an find an iPod 5G Video for cheap, that was the best one hey made in terms of sound quality. I got a broken one for 35 and I'm fixing it. I use line-out to an amp with Rockbox.

I don't know enough about non-Apple MP3 players to make a good recommendation. I have to stick with Apple for line out and eventually digital extraction, but if you are not using digital extraction, Sandisk. The Clip takes Micro SD cards and (I think) has line out functionality. If not the Clip, then another Sansdisk product.

No. Same deal with Beats and Skullcandies. They absolutely SUCK for what you pay.
Get some similarly priced headphones and then tell me Bose has good SQ. You can't.
