In "Gears of War 3," there are plenty of multiplayer modes to keep you occupied, but few have gotten a bigger upgrade than Horde. Horde 2.0 now allows 5 players to take on waves of enemies and, as an added layer of complexity, you can now upgrade strategic defenses scattered about the map to help your odds of survival. Way better than making ridiculous shield walls in "Gears 2," right?

GEARS OF WAR 3 COMPLETE UNLOCKABLES LIST

Here's the thing, though. Even with five people, and even on the easiest difficulty setting, getting through 50 waves of Horde mode is a true challenge. Which is why I'm here to offer some tips which may help your odds of survival.


TIP #1 - GO TO THE BATHROOM FIRST

Making it from Wave 1 to Wave 50 with 5 people on the easiest setting, Casual, takes about 2 hours, assuming you don't end up dying repeatedly on a number of waves. There's nothing worse than making it to wave 43 and realizing the dog has to be walked. Don't be that guy.

Pro-Tip: If you're just interested in earning the Horde achievement, the game saves your progress every 10 waves. If you completed the first 40 waves in a previous game, you can skip to Wave 41 from the start. You'll miss out on a medal, but you'll nab those 10 achievement points.

TIP #2 - PLAY WITH 5 PEOPLE, IDEALLY FRIENDS

Making it to Wave 50 with 4 people is doable but extremely difficult. Less than 4 is nearly impossible. So make sure you have a full group of 5 people playing. Even better, play with friends, as communication is key when it comes to upgrading defenses and sharing ammo boxes. Friends are also less liable to quit on you at the first sign of trouble...unless they really hate you.

TIP #3 - UPGRADE, UPGRADE, UPGRADE

What's that, you say? You can't build a turret yet? You need to personally unlock defensive emplacements in Horde mode by upgrading lower level emplacements. For example, you'll start with only the ability to build caltrops to slow Locust down. Repair the caltrops enough and you'll eventually earn the ability to build decoys and upgrade your caltrops into razor wire. Later level upgrades include turrets, auto-turrets and even a Silverback mech (as seen in the campaign). Earning these later upgrades may require multiple playthroughs of Horde, and unlocks are persistent. I've played through about 120 waves so far and I've only unlocked the first three items, for example.

TIP #4 - IDEAL MAP: OVERPASS

If you're looking to increase your odds of making it to Wave 50, play on the map called Overpass. It's the map that has the giant, broken stairway in the middle and two city streets on the right and left. When the game starts, run up the stairway and buy the Command Tower at the top. This is where you'll be upgrading the majority of your defenses.

The benefit of this map is obvious. When each wave starts, you'll be able to use turrets and long-range rifles to take out the smaller Locust. As things get harder, the Locust will be funneled up the stairway, making them easy pray for the turret at the top of the stairs.

Once you've got a solid defense on the stairs, you should consider buying the Command Towers to the left and right of the stairs. These will allow you to build razor wire at the very bottom of the stairs, slowing and damaging any Locust who try to come into your base. Don't buy any of the defenses that are beyond the stairs, though. You'll need every dollar to keep your base in working order.

TIP #5 - CHALLENGES, WEAPON DROPS AND BOSS WAVES

Every once in a while, Horde mode will give your team a challenge. These involve mini-objectives like "Get 8 execution kills in this wave" or "Make sure no one dies in this wave." Completing a challenge nets everyone in your team some bonus cash. It'll also cause weapon boxes to spawn, indicated by a dollar sign on the HUD. DO NOT OPEN THOSE BOXES...yet.

Most random guns on the ground will disappear after the end of a wave. Not so with weapon boxes, which will stick around until you use them. Since they generally have a handful of super weapons inside, you'd do well to wait until a boss wave (Wave 10, 20, 30, etc.) before cracking one open.

Pro-Tip: One of the weapons that drops from the weapon crates is the Vulcan Cannon. This weapon requires two people to use it effectively. Basically one person grabs the heavy machine gun while another person grabs the ammo box. The two players will be tethered together but, so long as the person with the ammo box keeps hitting X, the person with the machine gun can just keep firing. It's a great way to take out large bosses, but it requires consistent communication between the two players.

IT'S JUST BEGINNING

Making it to Wave 50 on Casual is a challenge, but it's nothing compared to making it to Wave 50 on Normal or, heaven forbid, Insanity. If you're worried about dialing up the difficulty, you can always turn on a mutator or two. These will make the game easier or harder and will affect your score accordingly.

But, for starters, just focus on getting to Wave 50 in any way possible. It's a great way to spend an evening and is easily one of the best new features in "Gears of War 3."

CHECKOUT

Cliff Bleszinski: The thing you need to know about this map is its snug. Its super close-quarters, so youre probably going to want to stick with the shotgun.
GamesRadar: Would you recommend a second weapon after the shotgun?
Bleszinski: The Retro Lancer because its good at medium to close range and not very good at long range. You can use the sniper rifle and the Hammerburst in that map and be effective, but generally you want to stick with close-quarters weapons.
GamesRadar: And what does the fire alarm do?
Bleszinski: The fire alarm actually triggers a hidden weapon that you have to then find. In the beta, it was just a smoke grenade, but in the full version, you might be able to find something fun and secret there. (Editors note: Watch the video above to see the secret weapon in action!)


DRY DOCK

Bleszinski: We like to play Horde in this map. Youll want to hole up as high as possible, stay off the low ground, and build up your bases because once those creatures start coming, you want that height advantage.
GamesRadar: How is Beast Mode on this map?
Bleszinski: All the modes are good across all the maps, but my favorite way to play Beast Mode is in Sandbar.


SANDBAR

Bleszinski: Sandbar is a unique map for the franchise in that its actually the largest multiplayer map weve ever built for Gears. Normally the maps are the kind of snug ones like Trenches or Checkout, but Sandbar is sprawling Id say its possibly twice as big, if not larger. You feel like youre in paradise until your head gets blown off. Remember the Boomshot spawns up high, so grab that to decimate your foes.


GRIDLOCK

Bleszinski: Gridlock is the perennial Gears of War favorite map it was actually the map that cracked the code of what we thought would be fun for Gears multiplayer. The key is to continue to focus on the high ground where the sniper rifle usually spawns and make sure youre controlling the grenades in the middle of the map. Otherwise, somebodys going to take you out. If you control the middle, you control the entire map.


HOTEL

Bleszinski: Youre going to want to stay inside generally, especially if youre playing Horde mode. Youre going to want to hole up in the hotel, watch the doors and plant your fortifications, much like the characters in Night of the Living Dead.
GamesRadar: What will happen to you if you get stuck outside?
Bleszinski: You might find a Brumak spawning on top of your head.


MERCY

Bleszinski: There are stairs on the side of the map where heavy weapons often spawn, such as the One-Shot. Then theres a church in that area as well that has a Boomshot in it, so control those two sections of the map and youll win.


OVERPASS

Bleszinski: This map actually has a turret in it, and its the only one that has a turret. You can really control the high ground by getting on that thing and taking out your enemies.
GamesRadar: How do you get to the turret before everyone else?
Bleszinski: One of the best ways is to use your smoke grenades and charge through the smoke, which is also a great way to get a free kebab. I love the chainsaw its kind of our baby but theres nothing better for me than throwing out a smoke, holding the B button with the Retro Lancer and hopefully getting something. I feel like Im dynamite fishing.


THRASHBALL

Bleszinski: The big thing about Trashball is controlling that middle in regards to knocking down the scoreboard, but its also about that high ground on the side of the map. Once you can hole up there, breaking that lock is very, very difficult to do and Ive seen entire matches won that way.


TRENCHES

Bleszinski: The best way Ive found to play the map the most gratifying time Ive had is when the One-Shot spawns up top and I have friends who are spotting for me. Even through the mist, they spot them and I can just take out the bad guys. Same thing with the Mortar on that map, so its a combination of heavy weapons and spotting that are the best ways to kick butt in Trenches.
GamesRadar: Where do you want to be when that sandstorm comes in?
Bleszinski: Ideally, youd want to be in the new underground section we added in, because people are going to be raining Mortar hell. You know, it turns into madness when that sandstorm hits because everybody just switches to their Retro Lancers and starts bayonet charging through everything.


OLD TOWN

Bleszinski: The key to winning in Old Town lies in the chickens. If you can grenade tag the chickens and have them chase your enemies down, then youll be winning in that map.


GENERAL TIPS AND TRICKS

Bleszinski: One of my favorite techniques is to find somebody whos reviving somebody else, get close, and use my sawed-off shotgun to smear both of them. Immensely gratifying.
Learn to use the Digger launcher its very, very useful and can actually be as useful as the Boomshot in the right hands. One of the things about the Digger is that you can aim upwards so that itll have a higher arc before the little digging creature gets in the ground, so you can lose some of the telegraphs and people dont hear it coming.
Also, when you meat bag somebody take them as a hostage you inherit their grenades. So if you happen to have frags and I take you, then I can hit up on the d-pad, bag tag you, and take out some bad guys.





Weapons:


Automatic Rifles

Lancer

The Lancer is a fully automatic rifle, delivering a surprisingly high level of accuracy (even at range) with a good amount of damage. The Lancer's ammo and clip capacity both are the highest of the standard machine guns. Plus, it's got that chainsaw, for awesomely brutal close-range executions.

The Lancer is not the most powerful rifle in Gears 3's multiplayer, and it takes almost a full clip of bullet to put down your opponent, but with a high rate of fire and high accuracy, it can keep enemies at a distance. A simple tip to learn is whenever you are going to use the Lancer's chainsaw for close combat, hold down the B button and tap like crazy. You never know if your opponent is planning to do the same thing, and most likely you'll enter into a chainsaw duel. Play it safe, I say.

Hammerburst

Another returning standard machine gun, the Hammerburst is smaller than the Lancer and even more dead-on accurate. The tradeoff is the rate of fire, which is the slowest of the game's MGs, and the ammo capacity, which is the smallest in this class. The Hammerburst lacks any sort of bayonet attachment, so it is best used at range. The rate of fire may be slow, but those bullets pack a punch, so choose your shots wisely. Clicking the right stick while holding down the left trigger drops you into a first-person iron sights aiming perspective, essentially eliminating what little recoil this weapon has to begin with.

It's better in multiplayer to use this gun at a far distance for maps like Dry Docks, Sandbar, or even Hotel, since the accuracy is amazingly high, you can use it like a automatic sniper. I would suggest not using this machine gun if you are horrible at aiming.

Retro Lancer

The Retro Lancer is a newcomer in Gears 3. Similar in appearance to the regular Lancer, this gun trades the chainsaw for a nasty-looking blade bayonet. To use it, you'll need to line up an enemy and charge at it by holding down the B button. The Retro Lancer is easily the most powerful of the machine guns, but it comes at a considerable cost: the recoil has a severe upward pull -- exacerbated by a reasonably high rate of fire -- and the ammo capacity is half of what you get in a regular Lancer. There's also a slow reload time for this one. Seriously, though, the recoil is no joke; expect to be correcting your aim constantly even if you're capable with the burst fire.

In multiplayer the key here is to tap the right trigger creating a burst rate of fire, rather then holding it down. You want to either aim at the head or body of your opponent and you'll kill him in a few shots. The best way to use the bayonet is to charge at your opponent who doesn't notice you. Running into the opponent as he sees you will just give him an easy target and an easy kill.


Secondary (NON-LOADOUT) Weapons

Digger Launcher

The Digger Launcher is basically a Boomshot with a twist. While the latter weapon resembles a standard grenade launcher in the way it behaves, the Digger Launcher instead fires a small, burrowing creature a digger thats been strapped with proximity explosives. When you hold down the left trigger, a targeting line is overlaid onto the battlefield showing you where your shot will travel. Once fired, the digger follows that path, popping up out of the ground and exploding either when it reaches the end point or when any enemies get too close to its travel route.

Longshot

The Longshot's absence from the list of basic loadout weapons has always been puzzling, but it's something you'll need to acquire on the battlefield rather than simply start with (certain co-op situations notwithstanding). This is the Gears version of a sniper rifle. One shot per clip, long reload time, high damage -- though only headshots offer one-shot-kills -- and scoped, with a click of the right stick while the left trigger is held down.

Boomshot

The Locust take on a grenade launcher. There's not a huge arc on this thing, but you'll definitely want to aim a little higher if you're aiming at a more distant target. A single head-on shot to the body of the larger Locust types -- Boomers, Maulers, etc. -- won't be enough to take it out, but will nonetheless weaken the enemy to the point that a couple machine gun bursts should do the trick. Also great for taking out groups of human-sized-or-smaller creatures.

Scorcher

This is the Locust flamethrower. It can be very, very powerful at close range, though it doesn't offer the insta-kill opportunities that your shotguns do. Which means that whichever enemy you're burning alive might have some opportunity to take a few parting shots at you before turning to ash. Keep that in mind.

Torque Bow

This is a unique Locust weapon that compares best with the compound bow and exploding arrows that Sylvester Stallone's Rambo character put to good use in Rambo II. The Torque Bow must be charged before it can be fired; hold down the RT and you'll see a curving line slowly becoming more straight as the charge time increases. This is your explosive arrow's arc of flight. You can fire at any time, but a fully charged Torque Bow is dead-on accurate; wherever your reticule is when you release the trigger, that's where your arrow will land. The only thing to note: the Torque Bow can only be charged with a shot for so long before it automatically lets that shot fly.

Hammer of Dawn

While the Hammer of Dawn's stopping power easily qualifies it as one of Gears' super-weapons, it's also something you can carry in your inventory like the other, more standard weapons. You only get a handful of shots with this highly damaging weapon, so make each one count. You're not actually dealing any direct damage either; the Hammer of Dawn is a laser targeting system for an orbital satellite that fires an everything-killing laser once a target has been properly "painted."


Sidearm Pistols

Snub Pistol

This is the pistol that everyone starts with, and also the weapon you should always seek to replace no matter what. You can carry a reasonable amount of ammo for it and its got a good clip size/reload time, but this thing is weak. Only pull it out if you have no other choice. As with all three sidearms, you can zoom in your aim slightly by clicking the right stick while holding down the left trigger.

In mulitplayer I would suggest using the Snub pistol only when you are out of ammo. The Snub pistol has been improved from Gears of War 2, but the best way to use this pistol is for clipping of your opponents while they hide behind cover.

Gorgon Pistol

The Gorgon should be your go-to sidearm, no question. It's got the highest ammo capacity in this class, largely because it's a fully automatic weapon. That's right, folks: the Gorgon burst fire seen in previous games is gone. So what you're basically looking at is an Uzi. It's not terribly powerful, or quick on the draw, but it's a much-needed supply of bullets when the well runs dry on your machine gun.

In multiplayer, the Gorgon pistol is a better sidearm to have over the others. It's easy to control when unleashing tons of bullets in your opponent or at their cover and it does good damage to make your opponent worry about their health. I would recommend this sidearm at all times.

Boltok Pistol

The Boltok is the standard Locust sidearm, a hand cannon that begs comparisons with real-world firearms like the Magnum revolver. It's not nearly as powerful as a hand cannon could be -- the Boltok actually seems a bit tamer than it was in Gears 2 but it's useful in a pinch. Quick reloads, but only a moderate rate of fire and small clip/ammo capacity.
In multiplayer, I would only suggest he Boltok Pistol is you are confident in your aim. The best place to shot your opponent is his head to use the Boltok pistol effectively. Missing shots at close range will result in a body bag just for you.


Shotguns

Gnasher

The Gnasher is your basic semi-automatic shotgun. It's got a slow-ish rate of fire and is basically useless at a distance, but it also gives you eight shells per clip. If you can get right up in the face of an enemy -- I'm talking inches away -- and land a point blank shot, it's an instant kill for most human-sized enemies. This is a solid secondary for those who like to mix it up close. Try to get good at hip firing with this puppy; it becomes a deadly force to reckon with in the right hands.
The Gnasher was the king of shotguns in multiplayer with it's overpowered damage, but it now has been downgraded in Gears of War 3. It has a faster rate of fire and a longer range to hit, but it still is not the shotgun you want to use. For a better shotgun learn how to use the Sawed-Off Shotgun.

Sawed-Off Shotgun

The Sawed-Off Shotgun is new in Gears 3, though people got to play with it in the beta earlier this year. This thing is a beast at close range. You only get one shot per clip, but it covers pretty much everything in your current field of vision when you fire. The reload time is insanely slow, so make sure you have an exit strategy in case your shot doesn't land or other enemies are nearby. The lengthy reload time and lower ammo cap (both the clip and how much extra you can carry) make this tough to recommend over the Gnasher, at least for the purposes of the game's campaign. Multiplayer is another story entirely.


Grenades

Smoke Grenade

Only marginally useful in the campaign since it really doesn't do any damage. Good for concealing your advance, but you're better off engaging at range anyway. You'll be better off with any of the other three, damage-dealing grenades.

Frag Grenade

This one goes boom, plain and simple. You don't get much more basic than a frag grenade. If you're playing a co-op game, at least two players in your group should keep these handy.

Ink Grenade

The Ink Grenade is a good area attack weapon. Toss it to create an inky, black cloud of liquid smoke, causing significant damage to anything -- friend or foe -- caught inside of it.

Incendiary Grenade

New to Gears 3, the Incendiary Grenade serves pretty much the same purpose as the Ink Grenade -- controlling an area -- only it uses fire to maintain that control.

A NOTE CONCERNING GRENADES: While all grenades can be thrown, they also all share a secondary feature that allows you to essentially set them as mines. Arm your grenade, aim your reticule at a nearby wall and press the B button. Your character will plant the explosive in the wall, and it won't detonate until/unless an enemy gets close. The same tactic can also be used to plant a grenade directly onto the body of an enemy. This is especially useful against the game's armored foes.


Two-Handed Weapons

Cleaver

This thing is no knife. It's really more of an oversized machete, and probably a horribly rusty one at that. Not terribly useful overall, as it only has a limited number of attacks and, as the old saying goes, it's not generally a wise idea to bring a knife to a gun fight.

Mulcher

The Mulcher is a chain gun you can carry. Max ammo capacity is 200 shots, though the gun will overheat if you attempt to fire them all at once. No reloads are required, but watch the heat bar as you're firing to maintain a steady outpouring of bullets with this puppy. If you're using a Mulcher to keep watch on a specific area that's about to be flooded with enemies, feather the right trigger to keep the barrel spinning,. You'll be quicker on the draw when trouble arrives.

Mortar

The Locust Mortar is devastating when used correctly. It works like any other mortar you've ever seen. Line up your shot, get your range (by holding down the right trigger until you feel you're sending the shot far enough) and fire. Everything in its blast radius will probably be blown to pieces.. Immediately.

One-Shot

The One-Shot is a Longshot on steroids. You only get a few shots with this thing but, as the name implies, just about anything you connect with will fall in only ONE SHOT. From the smallest nothing Polyps all the way up to the flying Reavers. One shot and they're toast. Hold the left trigger down to look through the scope and charge the weapon up. Once a red dot appears in the middle of your sight picture, you are free to fire.

Vulcan Cannon

Technically speaking, the Vulcan Cannon is a four-handed weapon. Two to man the gun -- which sends 600 very powerful bullets downrange at an insane speed -- and two to man the ammo feeder. While there are 600 shots to fire, the gun's clip holds only a fraction of that. A second player (or team AI) can man the ammo feeder, tapping A continuously to keep a steady flow of bullets moving from the magazine into the gun. Whenever you see one of these, make sure you put it to good use. It's devastating.

Game Modes


Gears of War 3 features a much new and improved multiplayer system. We will see fresh new game modes as well as revamped games modes. Weather your a "kill and die" style of player, or you like a bit of strategy Gears of War 3 will provide it all!


Warzone

Both teams fight to kill each other and each player has one life. No respawns.


Execution

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

The same as Warzone however the player must execute his enemy in order to kill him.


Team Deathmatch

Your team spawn with a total of 20 lives for the collective team/squad. Once all the lives are used for your team, it will turn into a "last man standing" game.


Capture the Leader

The opposing team will try and meatshielded your leader for 30 seconds to gain a the win. At the same time you are trying to protect your leader, you are trying to kill the opposing team's leader. Leaders for each team are Queen Myrrah for the Locust and Chairman Prescott for COG.


King of the Hill

King of the Hill has been revamped and now is a mashup of King of the Hill and Annex. The goal is to hold a certain objective on the map until the time is up, which in turn will give you a point. Once you gain the point another objective will spawn on the map.


Wingman

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

Get teamed up with a wingman which is the same character as you and fight against the other teams. The gloal is to be the last team standing. The main change in this mode is that now there is four teams of two rather than five teams of two.


Beast

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

You play as Locust and kill off waves of COG. Much like the mode Horde mode which has been in past Gears of War games.

Characters can be unlocked for use in Versus multiplayer as well as in Horde mode (only human characters). All characters have the same abilities, with the difference being purely cosmetic.

Earn the onyx Big Money medal in "Gears of War 3" (for earning money in Horde mode)

Mutations


Mutators can be used to add variables to the gameplay in Horde mode and Arcade mode. Mutators that increase difficulty will also increase your score, while those that make the game easier will decrease your score. "Fun" mutators have no impact on score or gameplay and are just for fun.


COMET (Easier)

Earn the gold Shock Trooper medal (for earning a certain number of First Blood ribbons)
As you roadie run, you'll build up energy, letting you ram into enemies.


INSTAGIB MELEE (Easier)

200 Wretch kills
Melee attacks explode enemies


SUPER RELOAD (Easier)

Earn the bronze Master-At-Arms medal (100 kills with each of the starting 5 weapons)
More damage and clip size for an active reload.


INFINITE AMMO (Easier)

Earn the Combat Engineer pin 100 times (worked on 5 fortifications in one deployment in Horde)
Infinite ammo for all weapons.


BIG EXPLOSIONS (Easier)

Earn the Hail Mary pin 100 times (Boomshot kill from over 200 yards away)
Bigger explosions, natch.


ENEMY REGEN (Harder)

Earn the silver Aficionado medal (for playing a certain number of chapters in Arcade mode)
Enemies will regain health over time if you don't kill them.


VAMPIRE (Harder)

Earn the Executioner pin 100 times (for having the most executions in a match)
Your health does not regenerate automatically, but you do earn health for dealing damage.


MUST ACTIVE RELOAD (Harder)

Earn the silver Active Reloader medal (for actively reloading a certain number of times)
The only way to reload is to perform an active reload.


FRIENDLY FIRE (Harder)

Complete the campaign in 4-player co-op
Teammates can cause damage to each other.


BIG HEAD (Fun)

Earn the gold Horder medal (for playing a certain number of waves in Horde)
Giant heads, "NBA Jam" style.


PINATA (Fun)

Earn the gold Investor medal (for repairing and upgrading a certain number of defenses in Horde)
Tokens drop from every kill. Picking them up earns you points.


FLOWER BLOOD (Fun)

Earn the silver King of COG medal (for earning a certain number of total points in Arcade)
All blood effects are replaced by pretty flowers.


HEADLESS CHICKEN (Fun)

Unlocked from the start
Enemies attack each other for several seconds after they lose their heads.


LAUGH TRACK (Fun)

Earn the bronze medals for Tour of Duty (Finish Campaign on Casual), For the Horde (Finish Horde on Casual), I'm A Beast (Finish Beast on Casual) and Warmonger (Finish Arcade on Casual)
Adds an audible laugh track to the game.

Accomplishing certain feats in "Gears of War 3" will unlock awards for your avatar. Here's what's available.


MARCUS'S DOO-RAG

Complete the campaign on Casual or higher.


LOCUST DRONE MASK

Earn the "Welcome to Beast Mode" achievement for completing 12 waves of Beast mode.


HORDE SHIRT

Earn the "Welcome to Horde Mode" achievement for completing 10 waves of Horde mode.

I haven't exactly gone to Multiplayer yet since I'm still playing Campaign, but I'm sure other people in this forum may be able to help you

I'm thinking about adding characters and their bios so I will decide later on.
