The Detroit Lions (6-10), will be likely to be facing The Buffalo Bills (4-12) are the two most qualified teams for the Superbowl.
The Super Bowl matchup has been set. Maybe not in the minds of NFL management, but in the stars, in destiny, in all the places that matter.
It will be a Detroit versus Buffalo Super Bowl. Youve heard of the Dawning of the Age of Aquarius? This is the dawning of the Age of the Incredulous!
Both teams have not only been shut out of the playoffs for more than a decade but have also been shut out of hope, expectations and respect for nearly that long.
But something happened in the alignment of the universe over the offseason. Perhaps the Lock Out had something to do with it. Perhaps it was something completely unrelated. But this year, if youre intuitive, psychic, clairvoyant, you can already sense it. You dont suspect. It isnt a hunch. It is a future fact as certain as the rising and setting of the sun and the changing of the seasons, yet as unsettling to the natural order as Global Warming.
For three consecutive weeks, these teams whose defeats are assumed, whose prospects are failure until proven successful, whose prospects have been as star-crossed as Romeo and Juliet, are suddenly clicking. These teams that have in the past frequently played a good game, come back from a deep deficit, only to fall behind again at the last minute of regulation time, or lose a sudden death shootout, are suddenly coming back and staying ahead. They are suddenly assuming victory and playing as if they will and must win, as if failure is not only not an option, it isnt even a plot line.
It is the age of Incredulity. The year of the underdog. It is a bad year for Goliath. It is a great year for two down-for-the-count rust belt towns with football teams that have most recently been reflective of the fortunes of the major industries that once made these two cities great and recently, in their failure, have made these two cities rusting hulks of their former greatness.
Matthew Stafford represents a new generation of political and economic leaders who will bring Detroit and Buffalo to success just as Stafford leads the Lions to success.
Adam Bettcher/Getty Images
And yet, word on the street is that these two cities are coming back economically also. Theyre refusing to accept failure. Theyre trying new things and starting to bounce back, claw back, grow new shoots.
And you cant separate one from the other. There is a true and complete connection between sports and economics, between football and communal failure or success. The fortunes of a citys sports teams can reflect reality or re-shape it. And if they reshape it, and as fortunes on the field begin to improve and fortunes on the street begin to advance, it is suddenly very difficult to separate one from the other.
The Bills and Lions will play each other for the world championship this year because they both come from towns that have suffered under their failures (sports and otherwise) long enough, that have now, thanks to their young teams and their young new leaders are thinking outside of the box to find new ways to compete and succeed.
These two teams will turn this season into a hopefest for the downtrodden, the overlooked, the underemployed and underpaid, the blighted, the defeated and the disenfranchised everywhere. Instead of having an Americas Team this year, we have Americas teams. And as the whole American economy is threatening to make the Bills and Lions recent records look like a Dale Carnegie convention by comparison, America will take hope and inspiration from the growing success of these teams.
If these two can conquer their conferences and make it to the big game, can make an art form out of the comeback, can take no-names, re-treads and rookies and somehow play together like veteran championship teams, then America can come back to or exceed past prosperity, not by doing the same old thing the same old way but by thinking outside of the box like Chan Gailey and Ryan Fitzpatrick, and by letting promising young leaders like Matthew Stafford take over and run the show.
It is so important to our country, our society, our economy, our way of life that these two teams continue their unlikely, upward trajectory. And you may not know it yet, but I do. My gut has already informed me. It is happening. It will happen. It is real. It is true. It is confirmed. And yes, it is magic.
Lets have a good 2011 season.
Post your expected outcome, or if other teams qualify.

Its only 3 games into the season, a LOT can happen and Buffalo's quarterback is a rookie.

With the scouting reports on the other teams, including injuries, not disagreeing but I'd say they got good odds

i would agree that buffalo might go to the playoffs but idk about the superbowl. they might screw up like the patriots did last year. and detroit on the other hand has an easy schedule so they might also go to the play offs but you will never know... its been 3 weeks...

Ryan "The Amish Rifle", "The Bearded Intelectual", "Fitzmagic" Fitzpatrick is not a rookie. He's a 6 year pro. Drafted in '05 (or '06 I could be wrong) by the Rams. He played in relief of Trent Green when he went out due to injury (and played pretty well), and then took over Buffalo's starting job last year after they finally got sick of Trent Edwards and his up and down crap play. He played for Cincy for a brief period backing up Carson Palmer.
Sorry, I'm a Fitzy fan...gotta make sure my dude is well repped ;)
To the OP: I found your post a fun read, but as others have stated...3 games is a bit early to start making predictions. I think both teams have taken positive strides, but I still believe it's WAY to early to start proclaiming either of these teams are PLAYOFF teams, nonetheless Super Bowl contenders.
Buffalo still lives in the AFC East. If you want a Playoff spot you're gonna win that brutal division, or earn a tough Wildcard spot. Yes, NYJ doesn't look as rough and tough as previous years, and Buffalo did just beat NE, but that division still runs through Foxborough and East Rutherford. I can see Buffalo potentially beating out the Jets for 2nd place in the division...but don't seeing them taking down New England. Your next best chance is trying to beat out the loser of the AFC North between Pittsburgh and Baltimore. At the end of the year...I just don't seeing them stealing a Wildcard over the Jets or Steelers/Ravens. I would personally love it though. I love what Buffalo does, I love the offensive mind of Chan Gailey, I love the rapport of Fitzpatrick and Stevie Johnson, I love how under appreciated Fred Jackson is, I love using them in Madden, I love my Fantasy Team with 6 out of 10 starters being from Buffalo...but I am just an optimist. When the weather gets rough...so will that high powered offense. I don't see them holding up for 16 games....unfortunately.
The Lions are a bit of a different story. I would buy them as a playoff team, and one that could even go deep into the playoffs and potentially beat out GB in the division on ONE condition...Stafford plays a full season. Their defense is absolutely nasty with Suh, Vanden Bosch, Delmas...their offensive line is extremely underrated (Stafford hadn't been sacked until this week), have all pros at all skill positions with Megatron, Best, Burleson and Pettigrew, and a special teams that play really well sparked by Stefan Logan. Stafford has played great this year (he's always played well when he actually plays), but I'm still concerned with his injury history. With Detroit...you keep Matt upright...this season, as well as others, will go well and have potential.
Again, I like your post...just think its a bit premature. I'm hoping I'm wrong...would love nothing more than a Detroit/Buffalo SuperBowl.

Yes, exactly, the Lions have an easy schedule and are underrated as well as the Bills, you never know. Who do you think will be #1?
