So I've been using a few programs from Stardock to improve the appearance of my desktop (I run a Vista 64-bit Dell Studio with a 1.1 tb HDD and 8 gb RAM btw).
I began downloading/saving files to my desktop a while ago so I didn't have to open Windows Explorer to view them. The only problem is: I had so many files on my desktop I couldn't find anything. So, while perusing the internet for freeware one day, I came across this website called [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] , where I found the answer to my problems: Fences. Basically you can group files and folders together in these little "fences" (not folders, mind you; when you look at your desktop in Windows Explorer all your files are there the way they would normally be). So here's my desktop:

And here are some of the settings you can adjust on your Fences, as well as an enlargement of a single fence:

Also, I found a program called ObjectDock from Stardock, which can essentially replace the bar at the bottom of your desktop. You can add your own shortcuts, adjust the size, fine-tune the visual aspects of the Dock, choose from a wide selection of preset themes, and much more. It resembles the Dock on Apple's OS. You can also place the Dock on the bottom, top, left, or right side of your desktop.
You can see the Dock in my previous pictures but here is a picture of what the actual program looks like when you open it:

There are lots of other cool programs on from Stardock that are compatible with most versions of Windows XP and Vista, and most have a free trial-usually with no 30-day limit ;).
There you go, now have fun customizing your desktop!

@TTG_SPEED: I like the aesthetic aspect of Vista, but I prefer XP when it comes to performance, so despite your RAM, I like your setup. My 8gb RAM comes in handy when I'm using After Effects and 5 other programs lol.
