Setting:
The novel occurs during the Great Depression on a ranch in Soledad, California. This is related to the time period it was written because the book was written in the Great Depression the same time the book take place. What is significant about the setting is that this where the author of the book was born and raised.
Theme:
The author of the work believes that friendship is a theme in this novel because he shows how important the friendship between George and Lennie. The author of the work believes that loneliness and alienation is a theme in this novel since Crooks is black he is shunned by everybody in the ranch. The author of the work believes that the American dream is a theme in this novel because everyone who wants to succeed eventually fails in their pursuit of trying to reach that dream. "I seen hunderds of men come by on the road an' on the ranches, with their bindles on their back an' that same damn thing in their heads. Hunderds of them. They come, an' they quit an' go on; an' every damn one of 'em's got a little piece of land in his head. An' never a God damn one of 'em ever gets it. Just like heaven. Everybody wants a little piece of lan'. I read plenty of books out here. Nobody never gets to heaven, and nobody gets no land. It's just in their head. They're all the time talkin' about it, but it's jus' in their head" (81).
Character:
A major character in the novel is Lennie, Lennie is always almost the focal point of the novel and characters seemed to be affected by him in many ways; Lennie is a very tall, strong, but he is very stupid and needs a person to tell him what to do, he is very obedient to George and listens to everything he says. Behind him walked his opposite, a huge man, shapeless of face, with large, pale eyes, with wide, sloping shoulders; and he walked heavily, dragging his feet a little, the way a bear drags his paw (4). George (Lennies best friend) is another major character who the story seems to revolve around. George is short, strong, and smart for what he does, he always gets him and Lennie out of a bad situation. The last major character is Candy. Candy is an old man with one-hand and cleans out the bunk and bunkhouses (he is called the swamper). A minor character is Curley, but he affects the story in many ways. He is the source of all the trouble caused to Lennie and George. Curleys Wife starts all the problems and eventually leads to her death by Lennie breaking her neck. Crooks is the stable buck and is treated badly because he is black, he never talks to no one or lets anyone come his part of the barn.
