How to start it.
Mining/ Smithing - Fishing/ Cooking - Woodcutting/ firemaking - Herbs/ farming (And other skills). On my accounts, i start fishing, as it is an easy stat to level, it is very very good money, and also prepares your food for when you do decide to level combat. Once getting one of the mentioned skills to 35, even 30.. you will start to get a good enough cash flow to buy your Armour: such as iron/ bronze/ steel to start achieving your combat goals.
Combat.
Think of what skills you want to be better at than others or which ones you want to concentrate on more. If you are just starting, do not be a pure. If you aren't, being a pure is a good and fun idea! The most popular pures are Magic, Staker, Rune, No defence, and Skiller. A Magic pure is a pure that raises Magic and defence or just Magic.
A Staker pure raises Attack and Defence most and keeps strength low. Used for Dueling
A Rune pure is a pure which has 70 attack (For a whip), 99 Strength, and 40 Defence (for rune armor)
A No defence pure is the same as a Rune pure, only generally ends up with 99 attack eventually... but will usually stay at 60 to keep the lowest combat possible and 99 strength with 1 Defence.
A skiller is one that does not raise any combat skills and focuses on skills.
Choosing a Name.
Think of your character's name. Is the name going to reflect you, for example an internet alias or nickname that you have, or is it going to be picked out and thought of for your character? Remember that this is a name you will have to stick with, so make sure your name fits you. Try to make a name that is unusual, creative, and original. Go for a name without a ton of numbers in it. For example, "Zezima405712". People that see you may portray you as a "Noob" or someone without any experience
Charaters.
Create your character's physical and clothing appearance to what you want. If your character is a fighter, go for more muscles than skinny arms. Get a clothing style that would work with the image you want. For the ladies, there's an option for either dresses or skirts as your default clothing. And everyone eventually gets tired of their customized outfit. So when you do, remember that you will be able to change it later. For free you can do this. (Note that the prices may vary over time, due to outfit updates). Your outfit also includes your hair style too. Same thing goes for this. You get to choose it for when you create and account for free, then on a later date you can change it
Tips.
[color=red]To get a decent combat level, the following skills helps to raise it up: magic, strength, defence, attack, prayer, ranged, hitpoints and summoning. NOTE: If you use Magic for example to raise combat level, nothing else will work besides Magic and Defense. Same with other skills. Depending on what is highest.
Some NPCs may attack you spontaneously. To get these NPCs to stop attacking you when you're in their sight, your combat level needs to be twice the NPCs combat level, + 1. So if you see a level 20 Dark Mage, it will not stop chasing you until you're level 41. Get it?
Pures are pretty much extinct with all the updates, but... Ever since PvP (Player Vs Player) was released, Pures are slowly coming back. Most Pures focus on certain combat skills, mainly Attack, Strength, Range, and Magic (with a little bit of Prayer thrown in too). These are normally 1 Defence Pures. This type is not recommended now, due to the updates, though they are common. Tankers are seriously recommended now. They are slowly becoming more popular, but they aren't as common still. However, I do recommend this type of Pure. They focus on Defence, Range, and Magic (also with some Prayer and little Attack and Strength). If you are wanting to be a Pure with a low combat level, then 1 Defence is definitely for you, simply because Defence is a combat skill that is big on raising your combat level. So obviously without it, it's harder to gain combat levels. There are some questions about Summoning, and it's connection with PvP and Pures. No, it is not NORMALLY used in PvP type activities. Most Pures should try to avoid this skill.
Skillers generally are the richest players in the game. Why? Well because, like we said, they focus on non-combat skills only (normally only). Non-combat skills are the skills that get you gp. Don't get me wrong, there are ways that combat skills can get you gp, but non-combat skills are made for making gp. So skillers who focus on them, would obviously be filthy rich!
Remember non-combat skills are just as important as combat skills, a level 20 with a farming skill cape is a good player, isn't he?
Money is also very important because you can't get 99 strength with a bronze dagger unless you you have great perseverence.
Quests are an important part in being a great RuneScape player. Quests can be very hard, but also very easy as well. There are many of them, and some may require certain skill levels and other quests to be completed first. So it is good that you train most of your skills that you can, because when you train them, you may be eliminating quest requirements. Doing quests, as many of you may already know, give you rewards. And rewards is the big reason why we do them, right? Some rewards may be gp, items, access to new areas, and/or skill xp. Every single player eventually has to do quests, so it's good that you do as many as possible.
