You need to have a gfx programme, then you need to upload the final product to photobucket, copy the direct link and update your avatar with that link on your profile page

You mean a banner?

Just make an image the banner size, go to edit profile, and put the url in the text field where it says banner.

Or if you mean an avatar
Download either
Photoshop
Gimp.

Make an image, save it.

Upload it to tinypic.
Then get the url and etc.

You can use Photoshop or Gimp.
