You have to buy a new cable, the tlkback cable. Don't buy the x31 I've had 2 in 6months! Buy x41 or Astro A40. But buy a new cable and see if it will be better of that!

From quite a bit of audio experience, it looks like fraying. Typically happens at terminations. You could replace the cable or cut it open, remove the frayed part, reattach the wires, and tape it all up.
Or, you could get some real headphones.

Turtle beaches have that problem. I have the same problem with my x31's occasionally I hear a cracking noise also. Get a new headset.
