Sorry but what I know about 2012 is there wont be any damage to the earth unless there is war(not including "global warming"). There is suppose to be a massive solar flare to project from the sun between 2013 and 2016 but that does not mean it will hit the earth the chance of that are too great to predict. As for the "fires and super heated atmosphere", the Earth has a magnetic shield that blocks radiation and other things from entering. The Aurora Borealis is created by solar flares that do reach the earth by going around the shield and touching the magnetic poles. Also people have confirmed that if the earth were hit by a large solar flare it would destroy our satellites and damage power grids and what not and will cause an Aurora that comes from the north pole almost down to the equator. The most it will take the U.S. to recover would be 2-4 weeks, the world 2-3 months. Now, this wont cause the atmosphere to burst into flames but it can cause cancer to some because of the radiation. Large flares have been emitted by the sun every 11 years and only one hit us back in the 1800's(I never heard of massive amounts of death or fires because of this.) but there weren't many electronic things besides the light bulb so not many people realised besides the northern lights reaching into the U.S. There is more info but it is worthless to post =P
