you can have him, as long as you don't complete the quest, he is very good to have if you play on master difficulty as the other monsters aggro on him and you can stand back and kill them, because Barbas is invulnerable and does not take any damage, very good for multiple dragon encounters. The best thing about this is that he does not count as a companion, you can do this with anyone in skyrim who follows you for a quest just simply don't complete it. i have 4 followers atm doing this
