So recently I've seen topics saying "What web host does TTG use phpBB etc?" or What forum software is used for The Tech Game community?" That being said, it inspired me to write this topic.

To start, PhPBB isn't a webhost, It's a forum software that you can install and configure using your webhost and creating a new directory extension, in TTG's case the directory is "Forums" as you can see in your address bar as seen here. [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

Mind you, TTG does not use conventional forum software, these boards are custom made by what is called a Web Developer, a person that specializes in making Websites.

A Web host is an intangible service that allows a individual to display his/her website publicly. Most Web hosting companies have different hosting "Packages" that differ in disk space, Database limits, Bandwidth, emails such as [[email protected]] and of course price. In order to host a website you need 3 things to get yourself started.

1. A Dedicated Web host.

2. A basic knowledge of HTML, PHP, and SQL for making web pages, and of course

3. A Domain name which can be purchased from a Domain Registrant or you can register free domain names such as .tz .co/ .cc and .cz/.cc as is recommended for beginners to avoid spending money blindly.

Further down the line as you improve your skills and knowledge of Web Coding and are comfortable with making some rather complex pages that suits your needs you may want to increase your security to avoid files and sometime entire directories from being stolen, for this you are going to need a VPN (Virtual Private Network) or VPS (Virtual Private Server) which again are available for purchase at many Web hosting companies, but for max security you may want to invest in a Personal Server box. This ensures that you are the only one who can access these files online unless permission is given to another individual to do so. These Virtual Servers don't come cheaply mind you as a basic box that will suit most needs of the average website will cost you quite possibly over $100 and can run up to well over thousands depending on the specifications. Being a beginner in Web Development myself I can offer a wide array of resources for the new up and comer, and hope that this tiny tutorial has made things a little clearer and a little easier for all of you!
