I've always been a fan of the fallout series, the background story of post apocalyptic rebuilding is one i find enjoyable to play around in, add in drug addled fiends, irradiated mutant hybrids, and radioactive wildlife, and you have a game that is quite enjoyable.

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

Fallout New Vegas takes place in the year 2281, though you wouldnt be able to tell aside from a few advanced weapons found throughout the game. It has a retro feel to it, most of the music in the game comes from the 40s-60s and most of the stylings of the game comes from within the same range. Anyone who played fallout 3 released by bethesda softworks will be in for a change, where you had the metro terminals, and clusters of buildings in downtown washington D.C. in fallout 3, you now have a desert wasteland, with a few settlements and the reinstatement of the las vegas strip's supremacy in the region.

Control-wise the game is similar to fallout 3 and for that matter oblivion. It runs off the same gameybro engine as the two afformentioned games. As with all the fallout titles, there is much to explore, and quite a few weapons to gather. The game itself starts off rather slow(fighting off thugs and traveling), but it soon picks up and you will be fighting mutants, gun dealers with plasma weapons, robots, and the dreaded death claws.

The one problem people have is that they mistake this for your average shooter. It is a shooter, but it is paced like an RPG, and implements quite a few rpg-like elements(leveling and perks). The perk system is unique to fallout, when you level up, every two levels you get to choose a perk, that can provide bonuses ranging from wildlife not attacking you, to being able to deflect projectiles.

The story is nice, and the addition of an improved faction system means your choices in the game will affect who will help you, who will hate you, and who will try and kill you on sight. Graphics may feel a bit dated(comparable to oblivion). But the gameplay is solid.

The major downsides to the game are the glitches, most are minor, but they can be annoying, and the fact that like oblivion, the backwards shooting(oblivion marksman) where you walk backwards shooting as you go kind of makes the game easy. You can easily just walk backwards unloading clips into enemies and not take any damage.

Aside from these issues, the game is solid and deserves a playthrough.
I would say this is a "buyable" title. Even after the story is done you can replay choosing different actions, or just roam around exploring the world. The replay value is high enough to warrant a purchase, especially now that you can get a used copy for under 30 bucks. While you are at it, if you havent played any of the fallout games, pick up fallout 3 GOTY edition, roughly 20 dollars for the game + 5 game add ons, provides hours upon hours of gameplay.
Fallout New Vegas Add Ons

Dead Money:

Dead Money takes place in the hidden oasis of the sierra madre casino, where the new radio transmission proclaims of wealth and luxury being abound. Upon arriving at the casino you find out that this is not the case, and the struggle to escape begins.

As far as addons go, Dead Money is not worth the money in my opinion, the rewards aren't great, many of the weapons and items you obtain are utterly useless back in the Mojave wastes. That combined with the fact that once you leave you can never return, make me feel its sub par. Combine the fact that you cannot return with the points system at the sierra madre(chips) being the only way to gain rewards after the DLC is finished and it leaves much to be desired, the story seems rushed and really just kind of bland, you know everything thats going to happen before it does.

Not worth the money, if you want it wait for the box edition of new vegas and get all the DLC's

Honest Hearts:

Honest Hearts takes place in Zion national park in Utah where mother nature has reclaimed her land, and no trace of the nuclear fallout remains. Very few manmade structures and tech remain, and the inhabitants have reverted to what seems to be a state similar to the native americans. You can choose to free Zion or enslave it, in this addon.

This DLC delivers where Dead Money did not, you take a caravan expedition to Utah in search of Zion. Once there you meet the "burned man" that is constantly hinted to in the base game. You can choose to help, or to destroy. The world itself is well done, you really get the feel you are in a different place. That combined with a story I enjoyed, useful equipment, and the ability to return whenever your heart desires makes this DLC a far better choice than Dead Money.

My Rating 8.5/10

Infinity Wards Modern Warfare 2 has stirred drama in the gaming community and media alike with a scene which presents the player with a choice to slaughter hundreds of innocent civilians while undercover in a Russian false-flag terrorist group. The scene is a powerful reminder of what gaming can do, and what it should do, as it grows into more mature shoes.

Lets pretend you have invited me over to your house to, say, participate in a heated competition of table tennis. And lets say, in the heat of a losing streak I yelled out a threat against your life. Youd probably laugh it off as an idle threat and make the next serve. However, if I continued to follow up that threat with an intricate description of how I was going to kill you, describing morbid details, where I would hide the body and how Id get away with it, you might begin to find it less funny. If I started including your family in such descriptions, meticulously explaining how I would kill them all one night in their sleep, drag their bodies into a rented pickup truck, then drive it to the woods and burn the bodies with the lighter fluid in my garage then dissolve the remains with lime, you might nervously smirk and start thinking about asking me to leave your house. Even further, if I began to sketch out elaborate plans about killing you, planning the best possible routes to invade your home without being detected, and describing with what weapons and in what manner I would kill you, you might begin to actually fear for your life. If I showed anyone these plans the authorities would probably be notified, and most likely, Id be arrested for what looked like planning a murder.

Where in that story did that stop being fun and start becoming a criminal activity? Was it when I first threatened you? No, it would be when I had gone beyond an idle threat and began defining the details of its execution. Creating an increasingly believable narration of a murder would probably begin to make you believe that I might actually do it. However, if I had done all this under the guise of being a writer, published the book, and started a controversy fit for Fox newsmost likely no one would be arrested. Thus we have an interesting conundrum. Detailing the plot of gruesome and/or criminal activity in private is a crime, where as publishing these detailed arrangements to the public could be, if properly contextualized, art.

It happens all the time in film. The details of violent and thoroughly disturbing situations are researched, written about, then re-enacted on screen for audiences to observe. Much of this is done to enhance the realism or immersive qualities of the film. Director Michael Mann is known for obsessively detailing the types of guns, sounds, and wound patterns produced by any weapons in his film. His attention to detail makes a film like Heat or Collateral far more enveloping, as it reveals things I otherwise wouldnt know about violent encounters. Also consider Riddley Scotts Blade Runner: the scene in which Zhora is retired. In 1982, this was an astounding amount of violence, portrayed in slow motion to make sure the viewers caught every movement of the replicants gory death. Scott had Zhora wear a clear rain jacket so the audience would see her blood spray against the inside of her coat as she stumbled through plate glass. This overwhelming scene is built around a meticulous representation of death, and by extensions forces the viewer to grapple with Zhoras suffering and sentience.

The intricate description of the details and the unflinching execution of my book with an invisible main character gruesomely murdering an entire family would probably be considered a detailed account by an author who had done his research to create an immersive experience. And the purpose of that immersion would be to make my audience feel something, probably in a melodramatic way. Or maybe just shock value (Im looking at you Eli).

So apply this to one of the more recent controversies in gaming right now, the level No Russian in IWs blockbuster release Modern Warfare 2. In it, (the video embedded below) one of the early missions in the game puts you in the shoes of an undercover CIA officer within a rogue Russian militant force. The scene opens as the group walks out of an elevator and opens fire on a crowd of travelers waiting in a security line. It then allows you to slowly walk forward, gun in hand, and watch or participate in the slaughter of several more innocent Moscow travelers as they drag the bodies of their loved ones to safety. Others, as they struggle to breathe and spit up blood, can be executed or left to bleed out.

The scene is effective at wrenching an emotional reaction from the player. The first time I watched as the gun pulled up in front of me and it was implied that I was to mow down this group of civilians, I was caught by surprise and overwhelmed. To be fair, most of the shock was due to the fact that the game was from the perspective of the good guys and here I was suddenly looking through the eyes of a bad guy. (Or good guy pretending to be a bad guy, but really, whats the difference when youre mowing down civilians in droves.) The title itself, Modern Warfare highlights one of the main plots of the gamemodern warfare is no longer cut and dry good guys and bad guys defined by uniform color. When a military pursues things like undercover missions, it asks individuals to participate in smaller acts of evil in order to achieve a calculated noble good. As the game plays out, the CIA is blamed for the massacre as your character is shot at the end of the scene no matter what you do. Russia declares war on the US and millions die in an attack on DC. The rather thin plot illustrates small evils can become larger ones, regardless of your illusion of well calculated moral equations (Also, whoever considers destroying hundreds peoples lives a smaller act of evil deeds needs to learn some math).

Why does this scene work so well in shocking the player? Lets first break down some technical details. Right now Modern Warfare is probably one of the most detailed games out graphically. It also has a myriad of perfectly recorded sound effects that drown the player in its bloody world. Its settings are exotic and mostly believable, and its voice acting is spot on. This is all capped off by what I think is one of the most important elements of gaming realismsmooth, well acted animation. You can see for yourself, as one character whispers Remember, no Russian and snaps his head about casually to face the door as if to say, this is just business. As you walk through the plaza with these killers, they make gestures that imply they are doing something akin to rounding up cattle for the slaughter, rather than taking lives. Combined with the way the civilians genuinely look terrified as they crawl across the floor in pools of their own blood, IW animated some of the most believable NPC acting Ive ever encountered. That in itself has a shock value to it, as you feel that IW endowed these polygons and pixels with hints of lifethen prompt you to viciously snuff it out. Combined with the fact that you are holding the gun and looking through a potential murderers eyes, IW struck a painful chord in any gamer. And if you think Im exaggerating, just look at the number of players in forums who say they couldnt bring themselves to shoot anyone in the mission. IW went out of their way to illustrate the intricate details of how a murder of hundreds of civilians would look, feel, and sound. Somewhat like my murder plan above, but infinitely more realistic. (Also, if you think there is a difference because the scene does not target anyone in specific, then take note that IW chose to remove the scene from the Russian edition.)

Heres where IW succeeded in an important step in gaming. They, maybe for the first time in the history of mainstream releases, inspired a gamer to choose whether or not to pull the trigger based on who they are as people, rather than some sort of Pavlovian point-based reward system. Consider how this scene would be different if points were awarded for every civilian killed, a la Grand Theft Auto. Well, the game would then be more of a bizarro world of dark humor rather than a serious commentary on the ethics of killing. Instead, the mission can be played out by either never firing a shot, or participating in the slaughter.

However you cannot be the hero and preemptively kill the Russians. And here lies the problem with the scene, and by extension a major problem with gaming to this day.

This level, and the game by extension, does not really provide you with any choices. It is more of post-cinematic experience rather than an interactive story. You push the plot forward by clicking some buttons and hitting a few targets. Some parts of the game even play out more like the rails shooter of yore (remember Rebel Assault?) rather than a true interactive experience. The story is linear and unavoidable, which disappoints me when the games plot so heavily depends on making moral choices. The major choices of the game are: Do I buy the game and play it? and then Do I play this mission? (It allows you to skip it if you choose.)

Sure you can choose to shoot or not to shoot, but both end in the same result, and arent really choices. If you want a player to comprehend the full nature of the moral quandary in front of them, they need to be able to draw on the full spectrum of their decision making and moral capabilities. If IW was serious about the moral questions raised by the story (which it probably wasnt) this level demands a dynamically branching sequence. Even if the choice of betraying your enemies results in a brief ending, it should be explored. Who says the good ending has to be the longer one? If you choose to blow your cover and stop the slaughter, you are killed, but heroically reveal the Russian false-flag operation. Thus you avoid the entire tragedy of a Third World War. If you want to play the game through by going along with the slaughter, you endure more painful and long-term consequences. This would be a much stronger statement, and one that would prompt me to play through either way. Frankly, I might be too shocked to do anything the first round, thus catapulting me into the World War Three scenario. The second time through, I might try to do something different, thus revealing different results and making me question why I had done nothing the first time.

Ultimately the scene succeeds in the short term by proving that a videogame world can be both immersive and emotionally jarring like any other accepted form of art, but taken in its entirety the piece fails. Most of the story line is made up of absurd characters who participate in other-worldly situations like the nuclear destruction of Washington DConly this scene seems believable. The realism of this scene is also ruined by a lack continual narrative. Most levels simply drop you in the middle of the action with little or no time for any attempts at character development resulting in a less than satisfying clunky story line (unlike the uninterrupted narrative of a game like Half-Life). Nor does the game provide a really rich interactive story which allows you to explore the consequences of any of the characters actions within the game-world.

Instead IW seems to have run across an excellent scene, in which they could have explored gamers moral fiber and critical thinking abilities, and decided theyd rather force the viewer to pretend to explore it, then yank them away from the ability to do anything meaningful about it. It reminds me of one of Professor Milgrams experiments in which he tested individuals on their ability to torture subjects in another room. Regardless of the screams coming from the other room, the majority of subjects chose to follow the orders of Milgrams assistants and continue to press a button which caused unseen (but overheard) pain. Only a fraction of the test subjects refused to participate in the experiment. Modern Warfare 2 does not allow you to step back in the game world and decide for yourself if you want to continue the slaughter, let alone make any positive action to stop it. And by doing that, IW cripples the key difference between a genuine interactive experience and any other existing linear narrative form. Rich interactive stories free us from the reticent wall between authorial intent and reader response. A great interactive experience breaks through that barrier, and instead invites both author and audience to explore actions which can offer exciting and unpredictable stories.

Tomy Clancy's H.A.W.X (High altitude warfare eXperimental squadron): 2

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

Release Date: September 3, 2010
Developers: Ubisoft Romania
Publishers: Ubisoft
Platforms: Xbox 360, PS3, PC and Wii
Genre: Military flight combat simulator
Players: 12
Rating: PEGI 12

Synopsis

After the events of the first game, the H.A.W.X squadron is sent to Middle East, where a high level of violence is being registered, and the appearance of various insurgents leaders in various hotspots. The team also has to investigate the mysterious disappearance of Russian nuclear weapons. The player will be controlling three groups: one American (Alex Hunter), one British (Colin Munro) and one Russian (Dimitri Sokov), each with its own pilots and supporting characters. There will also be references to other characters in the Tom Clancy universe.
The game begins with Colonel David Crenshaw participating in a routine patrol mission in the Middle East. After halting an insurgent attack, a volley of missiles is fired at the Air Force base that Crenshaw was stationed at, with one of the missiles disabling Crenshaw's aircraft, resulting Crenshaw being in enemy captivity and killing his fellow comrades from the previous series. A joint strike force, coordinated by Lieutenant Colonel Simms and composed of the U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force, and a Ghost Recon squad executes an operation to rescue Crenshaw. They are supported by Major Rebecca Walters, who pilots an AC-130 gunship during the rescue. In Scotland, Royal Navy Pilot Colin Munro encounters an unidentified passenger aircraft that explodes from an on-board bomb when undergoing training exercise. In Russia, an air force squadron led by Colonel Denisov and Captain Dimitri Sokov engages separatist aircraft but is ordered to retreat from the region after numerous Russian military installations have been attacked.
Shortly after his rescue, Crenshaw stays on-board an aircraft carrier due to an injured arm and conducts a remote surveillance operation with Voron agent Drachev. Drachev was originally undercover inside the Middle Eastern insurgent cell for Russia, only to have his cover become blown. A large scale military operation composed of Drachev and the U.S. military is undertaken to secure the region. Shortly after, Drachev executes a joint-operation with Russian Spetznaz and the Russian Air Force to recover stolen nuclear warheads from Separatists in Romaniskhov. However, only two out of the three warheads were recovered, and Drachev's transport is shot down during the middle of extraction. Colonel Denisov and Captain Sokov provide air support to the best of their abilities, only to be ordered by General Morgunov, to blow up the Nevskaya Dam in order to prevent the warheads from falling into enemy hands. This presumably kills everyone on the ground, but Drachev survives. Despite their efforts, a nuclear warhead is detonated in the Romashkino oil field, crippling Russia's energy supplies. As a result of the attack, Russian Ultranationalists seize control of Russia under the leadership of President Alexander Treshkayev.
While Sokov pilots a UAV to kill the separatists, Drachev covertly calls him in a command center, revealing that the events in Russia had been a ruse for the Russian Ultranationalists to sabotage Russia's energy industry and seize control of the Russian government. As a result of Ultranationalist control, Russia would then create war to gather much-needed resources and the government would be declared as heroes. Drachev has Sokov trace a call with one of the Separatists members to General Morgunov, Sokov's commanding officer. After being privy of the truth, Sokov escapes from a military installation with Drachev and retreats to Crenshaw's custody with the incriminating evidence. Drachev and U.S. pilots Hunter, Simms, and Walters undergo a joint operation to disarm one of the remaining warheads in Cape Town.
Meanwhile, Munro and the Royal Navy repels an assault by the Russian Navy. The Royal Navy then undergoes a joint operation with the U.S. military, Sokov, Drachev, and Norwegian forces to attack Morgunov's military and assault Moscow. During the final stages of the operation, Morgunov reveals that he and Treskayev did not act on their own, but were "following orders" from a "Mysterious organization." He intends to detonate nuclear warheads at a captured military base to attack the organization. The H.A.W.X. squadron proceeds with the final assault and destroys the underground base, with Simms, Walters, Colonel Denisov, and Morgunov perishing in the process, leaving only Alex Hunter.

Gameplay

In H2(HAWX 2), the gameplay varies between console. It is much easier to play with a controller whereas on PC, using the mouse and keyboard can be difficult. Although, you're better off just buying a joystick as it is more responsive that the mouse and keyboard; and lets face it, that's how flight simulators are meant to be played.
To be honest, if you're looking for a combat simulator where you actually do all/most of the work, this game probably isn't for you. You are heavily assisted in most detailed part of the game such as air to air refueling, landing and taking off. The HUD doesn't display the necessities the pilot would need to keep the aircraft in the air such as feet per second, g-force and so on. You also have somewhat of an artificial horizon. But, as well as the games cons, they're are pros. At the start of the game, you do go through some basic training as a British Navy pilot. You team up with a squadron in the RAF with the call sign Polaris; you being Polaris 4. You learn how to use your cannon, heat-seeking missiles, flares and the basics of dogfighting.

There is a survival mode which is pretty much like the BFBC:2 survival mode, but there is two slight differences. You're in the air and the enemy like missiles in their hundreds. You are constantly bombarded with missiles that have you to maneuver away from and drop flares into but they don't care. It is very frustrating.

There is a range of aircraft within the game including the Harrier GR9, F-22 Raptor, A-10 Thunderbolt II, F-16 Fighting Falcon, Eurofighter Typhoon, F-35 Lightning II, Su-47 Berkut and the gun turrets of an AC-130. The models are very accurate too, if I do say so myself.

Multiplayer

The multi-player in this game wasn't very well planned out as there is matchmaking issues and the servers have poor connection. While those problems persist, you can pull some fun out of it. You can do Deathmatch and a few other team vs. team matches, but you can also do co-op missions. These missions can you earn XP and the XP you earn can let you buy new skins for your plane, new weapons and even new planes. Although hardly anyone even plays the multiplayer, when you do get into a game, it's actually pretty fun.

Graphics

The graphics are not too bad. When you're near the texture anyway. Once you start to gain altitude and airspeed, you slowly start to see the textures unload, which is pretty weird. The ground textures and blurry, but there are 3D building which are pretty cool.

They are no way near as good as Battlefield 3 but not as bad as Microsoft flight simulator X's.

Halo: Combat Evolved
Halo: Combat Evolved known as "Halo:CE" or "Halo 1", is about a super-soldier(Spartan) called Master Chief, Sierra 117, or John who fights off a huge amount of aliens known as the Covenant. The game was released on November 15, 2001 made by Bungie and produced by Microsoft Studios. It was the first of the Halo franchise and was on the Xbox and PC. By November 9,2005 the game had sold more than 5 million copies worldwide. I know that isn't like "Call of Duty" but it's pretty good for the time! The Microsoft-owned company 343 Industries now holds the rights to the Halo franchise along with producing Halo Combat Evolved Anniversary which was released November 15,2011. Many magazines praised Halo as one of the most important games and best of all time. It was released on the Xbox and PC platform.

Gameplay
For the gameplay aspect, I'd give it a 8.5 because it's a great time with friends and over xbox live. The weapons are pretty balanced except for the pistol, it's power is unbelievable. It's usually more preferred than the Assault Rifle. It's very entertaining and will keep you playing it for hours and hours. The graphics are okay and pretty decent for the time it was.

My Rating
I'd give this game about a 9.5/10 because at the time I was playing for hours until my mom yelled at me to get off the xbox and still play it sometimes today! I think this is a good game if you want to go back to where it all started!

You can loosen up and do some track and field which is olympic games. Or you can knock down the competition in a game of bowling. or knock out the competition in a game of boxing. This is a great party game or a single player game. Because of the limitations this game has, it has faults, but is still fun.

Gameplay Rating: 8/10

Graphics
You really can't expect much from graphics. For being completely you Xbox avatar and cartoon surroundings the graphics are great. But if you want realism, this is not for you. This game is extremely cartoony but really fun regardless.

Graphics Rating: 7/10

Conclusion
Great game, get it for sure. If you don't have kinect and tend to hangout with people, then get the kinect. It i great for parties on all of the games. And thanks for reading my review.

Gameplay
The gameplay in this game is a little different then most games. Most of the time you will be playing with a partner and that means lots of teamwork. There are games where you kick, hit, and head butt to break down the wall with bouncy balls. Or you can go down roaring rapids with high jumps and coins to collect. You can use your whole body to duck, jump, hit, run in every game mode.

Gameplay Rating: 7/10

Graphics
The graphics in this, like all kinect games, are cartoony. They don't have a real feel to them. But you do feel like you are in spongebob or tom and jerry. Well not really but you get what I mean. Overall the graphics aren't terrible but thet are for sure not battlefield or Call of Duty.

Graphics Rating: 7/10

Conclusion
Great game for parties or just friends when bored. You always need a break from minecraft or skyrim or CoD once and a while and this is what to play. You unlock new places and avatar items so there is a constant sense of challenge.

Synopsis:

The game is set in World War 2, and takes place with four types of soldiers, Red Army, United States Army, and two British Army's.

Gameplay

The gameplay is intense. I personally played this game back on the PC when it first came out. This is still one of my favorite COD's up to date. The gameplay was probably the best yet. There were really no drop shooting, or trick shots. This game was all based upon skill, and aiming down your sights. I also liked the fact of how they had all of the old weapons, like the KAR98k, MP40, PPSH, Mosin Nagant.

Graphics:

The graphics were actually pretty stunning. Back in the day, on my PC, I had the best video card up to date, and the graphics were amazing. Still to this day I play it, and the graphics are still amazing. Here are some screenshots of some of the gameplay:

The Info

Release Date Nov-11th-2011
Type of game Role Playing Game (RPG)
Age Restrictions: M (for) Mature due to sex, alcohol and bloody gore
My first go at Skyrim:
As soon as you begin Skyrim you will notice that the graphics have improved since Oblivion.Skyrim has some special features for example as soon as you kill the first dragon outside of Whiterun you absorb what is called Dragon Soul. You can spend these Dragon Souls to purchase shouts. To be able to learn a new shout you need to find a word that might say like "Whirlwind" (which is the shout that you can run fast with).

Graphics:
The graphics in Skyrim are one of a kind. The way they made the dragons is very detailed here is some pictures of different types of dragons in Skyrim.
Special thanks to ElderScrolls know your Dragons post for these pictures Forums/t=2521620/know-your-dragons.html
A normal Dragon (very common) [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]
My favorite the Blood Dragon. You should be mid-level around level 20 before you have to face a Blood Dragon (the first time I fought one I was a level 22)

I rate the graphics 9.5/10.

Bugs/Glitches
Now we all know every game has its bugs. Its not really rare to walk up and see a chunk of a mountain ripped off in Skyrim. This game has alot of bugs and glitches.
Here is a video of a flying horse. :NOTE: I DO NOT TAKE ANY CREDIT FOR THIS VIDEO!

I dont feel like posting 40000 errors that the game has,but I do want to say that the bugs in this game just drops the experience for me.
Bugs 8/10

Conclusion
In conclusion to what I have said about Skyrim I will have to sum it up just like this.If you want a amazing game that the storyline you will most definitely enjoy then I suggest you buy Skyrim.Even though the game has bugs this game has such good graphics that is makes up for the mistakes.

My Overall rating is: 9/10
