Assuming the exchange rate is about right for the prices, the XB700s are in your price range. If you're in to bass, which you clearly are, the XBs will be great for you. Also, don't get those you linked. They're clearly gimmicky garbage. The Sennheisers will have infinitely better quality. If you want cheap bass, look at the Koss KSC75 or Portapro.

Also, do not get Turtle Beaches. I wrote a bit on them in the OP.

If you want over-ear headphones, the Ultrasone DJ1 Pros are one of your best options. They're some of the best bassy headphones out there. They also fold up, look great, make great gaming headphones due to the S-Logic tech (which actually works, apparently it's not as much of a gimmick as it may seem). Honestly, I'd have a hard time recommending on-ear headphones after this. These are more portable since they fold up, sound better, are more comfortable, and have more features than any on-ear offerings.

If you're a basshead, you will not be disappointed. The XB500s can be driven by anything, so an iPod can provide them with enough power to play at high volumes without struggling. It's not a matter of the iPod being inadequate.

If your music consists of crappy Youtube rips, then yes, your music will sound bad. It will sound bad on a $10,000 headphone rig. It's the fault of the sound file. If you want help getting higher-bitrate music, just ask. The audio file is where good sound quality begins.

Keep in mind that the XB500s are not expensive headphones, and by no means audiophile-grade. They're just an affordable headphone with a really fun sound signature. If your dad is not into music that really focuses on the bassline, namely rap, hip-hop, dubstep, and general electronic music, odds are he won't like how they sound. They're not his headphones, though, haha! Just don't expect to reach audio nirvana with these.

Also, at this point, your source is adequate. the 200 AUD would be better spent on better headphones. An easy upgrade for any iPod/iPhone source is a line-out dack cable (LOD) like a Fiio L3 or L9 and an entry-level portable amplifier, like a Fiio E6, a PA2V2, or a cMoy BB. These add a lot of bulk to your listening setup, so they're really not worth it until you really need an amplifier.

Anyway, if for some reason you are in fact disappointed, you can sell them or take them back.

If you DO want to upgrade your source, the first thing you want to do is upgrade the sound files on your iPod to higher-bitrate MP3. The "Audio Quality" section of this Wikipedia article might help you understand why higher-bitrates are important.

If you want a cheap source with incredible audio quality, Sansa Clips have Micro SD card support, line-out capability (for use with an amp like I mentioned earlier) and are dirt cheap. To make it even better, they're compatible with the Rockbox firmware, so you can get some serious functionality out of this little guy.

I sorta think beats are as good as they are said to be. They aren't overrated.

Well, I hate to break it to you, but you're wrong. It's not something I can sugarcoat for you. There's not just opinion backing me up. It's science in the form of frequency response graphs. There's also this durability problem you have to consider, among many other things.

What I think about the Beats is there is a certain look to them that appeal to many, including me.

Was going to buy Beats Studio, but instead going to listen to your advice about how inferior they are to others. I was curious though, some of the head phones look bulky. I was curious if you had any recommendations for about or below the price range of the beats for some headphones that look better / less bulky than the others. Thanks, I really appreciate the help and advice you're contributing towards TTG.

Having had experience with most of the Beats line, I would definitely call them bulky. Bulky in the sense that they're pretty unwieldy. The Studios rattle around quite a bit, and not in a way that gives you any sense of security. They creak and just feel delicate. They're also really heavy for how big they are. You'll find that most other headphones are more flexible, better built, and lighter than Beats. One of the best examples is the Audio Technica ATH-M50, which is not a particularly small headphone. However, they're very lightweight and you don't have to baby them at all. They'll take some serious abuse, and despite their low weight feel very solid. You can bend them, fold them, and flip them every which way, and they're made to do it.

Here's what they look like when you're wearing them (not me in the pic). It's easy to forget you have them on since they're so comfortable and light. They don't clamp hard and feel really minimal. There are tons of headphones like this, as well.

On-ear headphones also have a lower profile, and there are some really great audiophile-grade offerings here, like the Sennheiser HD 25-1 II, the Beyerdynamic DT1350, the Aiaiai TMA-1, and the V-Moda M80. Disregard the LPs in this picture, they're trash in comparison to the M80s and are just for size reference. V-Moda is in the middle of revamping it's line for the audiophile AND regular consumer markets.

You can also get in-ear headphones that sound better than full-size Beats for less. With those, bulkiness is almost not even a factor. There are also some clip on headphones with incredible quality to consider. Like my personal favorite pair, the Audio Technica ATH-EW9 "Sovereign." These are just stunningly beautiful, and sound great to boot.

Keep in mind that the <$15 Koss KSC75s sound much better than Beats Solos. I'm going to pick up a pair, even though I have a pair of Portapros that sound virtually the same. I've seen the KSC75s under 8 bucks, too!

Man, what a post this has been.
