Your motherboard may not support more than 4GB, or one stick of RAM may be defective.

No because I have 300GB of hard drive (HDD) but this is RAM I am talking about.

I did a bit of searching and I found some people that solved there problem by going into "MSCONFIG", then going to the "BOOT.INI" tab and opening the advanced tab, where they unchecked the box for 'Maximum Memory'.

To get into msconfig, go to Start>Run>Type in 'MSCONFIG.exe', then hit enter.

You can go to cmd prompt and type



It will bring up all of your stats.

I know one of my computers doesn't allow more than 1GB per slot, capping at 4GB. I tried a 2GB and it wouldn't install, perhaps that could be your problem?

Look it up in your manual, you can google your computer model to find more info on it.

Good idead, only it was already unchecked. I checked it and tried to enter a number higher than 4096 that it was on. I decided to leave it unchecked. Not sure if that means I can only support up to 4GB of memory or not :/

UPDATE:

here is the msconfig32.exe photo. i noticed it has only 4GB installed and 5.87GB of virtually memory.

I'm pretty sure I found the motherboard specs for your computer, from what I see here, you should be able to have a max capacity of 8GB.

Just went to crucial.com and it said one of my RAM slots was empty... recognized one of the 4GB. going to re-install the RAM now.
