Linux is the generic name for operating systems that are based on an open source copy of UNIX which was developed by Bell Labs.
Linux has various "flavors", including the free ubuntu.
While there are many different forms of Linux, If you are new I would recommend Ubuntu, as it is very easy for windows users to learn their way around, it also has alot of support.

you can just do different applications then windows and it has a strong built in virus on it too so you dont have to pay for a good one...
and you can put it on any comp you want....
you can over write your windows with this but id only recommend only people that are expert on ubuntu to use it

As others have said it is a free OS with many versions.

Ubuntu is the most popular and best IMO.

You can download the image file from their website and then burn it to a disc and boot your PC from it

Ubuntu is a popular distrobution of linux, and is easily customizable. I like Crunchbang Linux. Linux is an open source operating system
