Open is not the best for what you want. I would go with a closed design.
If you can handle the bulk, I'd get a pair of Sony XB700s if it's more bass you're after. They are QUITE large, and if you're traveling a lot, IEMs are the way to go. A great bassy IEM under 100 dollars is the Hippo VB from Jaben.

Sorry I have to ask, does the average consumer know what 30Hz or below sounds like? I was AB-ing some headphones I have on a pop/R&B song by Usher and it was VERY hard for me to distinguish any sounds in the 30Hz or below frequency range. If you're wondering about whether or not I can hear 30Hz, yes I can (I have a 10 second 30Hz WAV file as part of my headphone burn-in playlist).

With my Skullcandy Hesh headphones, it was rather obvious to my ears that they lacked any sort of sub-bass. I could see why the average consumer would like it though since it does have decent bass punch, despite what the graphs show.
However, comparing my Shure SRH940's (some call it bass-light), Sennheiser HD238 (fun headphone), and Sennheiser CX300's (really bassy earphone), it was hard for me to detect any sounds in the 30Hz or below range from the track. Maybe I was hearing it but I couldn't tell. In other words, maybe I could hear the 30Hz, but I couldn't distinguish it from the other sub-bass frequencies.
The point being, even if the Beats Studio headphones can't playback sounds in the 30Hz range, does the average consumer care? Usually when one says the Beats have 'incredible' bass, for me that implies they have either 'deep' bass (upper sub-bass) and/or good bass punch. The song I chose for testing purposes was chosen because I felt that it represents the kind of music an average consumer would listen to.
Sorry if this is off-topic, and I don't mean to start a whole side-conversation. I was just curious since you mentioned that and I found it hard to justify for my case.
The Shures are pretty infamous for not having much extension either, but you have a point. Not very many pop songs have bass that gets down low, but for the people that really appreciate bass, not going down to 20hz probably won't cut it. It is, however, good enough for most consumers, but paying $300 for "good enough" is kind of ridiculous.
Just wondering if the Beats--anyone care to test?--can get down that ^^^ low (Around 0:45). Just tested it with my $15 XePort 5010 and every drop was quite audible.
Out of curiosity, what song did you use?
Now THAT is a good track to analyze sub-bass (even though it is on YouTube). With the Shure's, I can hear the lower sub-bass. With my CX300's it's even more prominent (most likely due to the huuuge increase in the lower frequency range).

Quite large is an understatement! I visited the Sony store recently and was reminded by how friggen ginormous they are. It makes me want the XB1000's even more!
I'm kind of sad I missed the years of blasting DJ Magic Mike since THAT is some nice bass, especially considering that was mainstream! It gets the closet basshead out of me.

This commercial for the XB1000 put them into perspective for me. You really just can't believe it until you see it.
The cushions look like massive pillows. When I have spare cash (if, I should say), I might pick up one of the XB series just for fun!

allyouneedonline wrote im sorry root beer but i have to disagree with you, to be honest you sound like you hate dre beats because of the price. well they actully are good headphones.
i have my Solos HD (Red) Custom Edition. Yes they are exspensive as **** but they are nice headphones
They are nice-looking to some (I personally dislike their look), and they have decent sound...but decent meaning better than the stock Apple earbuds. You can get much cheaper headphones with the same audio quality for a fraction of the price, which why some people dislike the Beats so much (including myself).
Example?
My Sennheiser HD238 (won them from Headphones.com). Street Price: $60 or less.
The Beats Studios: Street Price: $300
Result?
The Sennheisers (despite them being a pretty low-end Sennheiser headphone) have the same or better audio quality as the Studios do for 1/5 or less of the price
Proof?
[img]http://graphs.headphone.com/graphCompare.php?graphType=0&graphID[]=1383&graphID[]=1673[/img]
The HD238's frequency response in the bass region is nearly identical and their treble response is much smoother than the Studios
[img]http://graphs.headphone.com/graphCompare.php?graphType=3&graphID[]=1383&graphID[]=1673[/img]
If you use the argument that the HD238's are open-back headphones, you can still look headphones from other companies.
Example?
Shure SRH750DJ. Street Price: $80 or less
Results?
The Shures have even MORE bass than the HD238's or your beloved Beats headphones
Proof?
[img]http://graphs.headphone.com/graphCompare.php?graphType=0&graphID[]=1383&graphID[]=1673&graphID[]=2191[/img]
The bass response from the Shures are still more accurate than the Studios.

^Darn images...why won't you load?
Where's your proof justifying buying a headphone for $300 if you can get the same audio quality from a $50 headphone? If you think that they are 'good' headphones, then why not buy a headphone that offers basically all the same without the bloated price tag? That's kind of like saying: I'll buy that $1.50 banana even though I can get it at $0.30. Even if you think your Solos HD's are 'good' headphones, I have to wonder what you will think of the headphones mentioned above, which are scientifically proven to perform better in terms of audio quality than the Studios.

Skip all the way to the XB1000! That's what I'm doing once they drop down to $150! The XB500 is kind of hopeless in my eyes because their mids are so funky. The XB700 seems just okay, but why settle for less? ;)
Are we really off topic by still discussing headphones? I mean this can be kinda helpful to readers in a way.

Yeah, I've been waiting for the XB1000 to come down. It seems like they would make a fantastic addition to any collection or as a secondary headphone!
Lurkers gonna lurk! I would call this pretty much on topic. Lurking is how we learn.
