So I recently got a hard drive and I asked my friend if I were to install a game would I be able to play without the disc and he said no. So if I were to install some games on my hard drive and the disc got damaged or cracked would I still be able to play it? And if not what's the point in installing the game?

Yes you could as long as the game isn't completely broken.
And some do it to make the game run smoother, it was recommended by dice for battlefield 3 user's to install it.

Depends on how bad the damage actually is.

And the point of installing games is so the game runs smoother and your console makes less noise when playing the game.

The point orriginally was to have the disc spin for a minute to verify you own the game and then just play off the hardrive. Recently thought it just seems to split the memory between the disc and the HD.
