I know you have fixed it but it may not have been Norton which was the problem,

I have norton on 4 of the Computers in my house, everything works fine,

I think you may have had a virus which well lets say, hid in the Norton files,

I am pretty sure anti-virus systems don't really search the folders where they are installed.

But make sure to Re-Downloaded another anti-virus and keep it upto date,

And before you or anyone downloads anything to the computer remember to scanning before using it.

You should also think of investing in an External HDD for backup purposes incase the computer gets a nasty piece of malicious software.

Well Norton hasn't been installed in about 4 or 5 months and I run AVG once if not twice a week. I think AVG does scan the Norton folders. But it still could have been a stealthed virus.
