Shooting down a report from last week that suggested the PlayStation 4 would be announced at this year's E3, Kaz Hirai has denied Sony plans to make any such announcement in June.

Pointing to Sony's dedication to having a 10-year life cycle with its gaming systems, Hirai -- the current chairman of Sony Computer Entertainment who is rumored to soon be Sony's next president -- said there isn't any hurry to bring out a new console. He echoed what was said by SCE president Andrew House, who recently stated Sony is "just entering into this great period for PS3," adding, "I don't think we're contemplating talking about anything to do with future console iterations at this point."

"Andy is absolutely right in that we are not making any announcements at E3," Hirai said at CES, reports the Wall Street Journal. "I've always said a 10-year life cycle for PS3, and there is no reason to go away from that."

Of course, that's exactly what Sony would be expected to say even if an announcement were being planned. So even with Hirai and House denying the reports, there are still sure to be those who continue to expect a PlayStation 4 reveal to come at E3 in June, just as many were anticipating a new Xbox announcement during Microsoft's CES press conference on Monday.

Whatever the case may be regarding an announcement, it's highly unlike that the PS4 will be out anytime soon. If ever there were a generation for Sony to actually take 10 years before releasing its next system, this might be as close it gets. While Sony does tout the 10-year life cycle of systems past, it's never waited more than six years to bring out a new console: the original PlayStation was released in 1994 (1995 in North America), followed by the PlayStation 2 in 2000, and PlayStation 3 in 2006.

That pattern would suggest PS4 will be out this year. Instead it seems more likely that Wii U is going to be the only new home console released this year, as Sony has stated it won't rush the PS4 to market because of the Wii U.
