Every service on the internet uses a "port" and these ports must be forwarded correctly based on the service.
Xbox Live uses the following ports:
All three of these need to be setup to forward both TCP and UDP traffic to your Xbox's local IP address (probably something like 192.168.1.103, depending on your router).
I would highly recommend going to :
[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]
They have step-by-step instructions to open ports for NAT settings for each different router.

2074
3074

Alot of ISP's will refuse to open the ports required by Xbox. The reason being that if they open the ports your computer is more vulnerable to hackers and viruses, if your computer is damaged as a result then it's the ISP's fault.
1:So instead open up any internet browser and go to your Router Confg Page. This can be done by typing 192.168.1.1 in the address bar at the top of the page.
2: Once there go to the advanced options menu.
3: This next step depends on what router you have, i have a BT voyager 2110 so for me i would go to the Virtual Server menu at the side of the page.
4: From here you should see an option to forward to a DMZ host, this is what we want.
5: Now go to your xbox dashboard>system settings>network>configure, once here see what your xbox IP address is.
6: On your router config page you just have to forward the DMZ host to that IP address.
7: Now reset your modem and see if your NAT is open, in most cases it should be.
