BlackMagik wroteIshcabible wroteBlackMagik wrote I hate to grave dig like this but I feel like I need to in this certain situation. Now I am no headphone expert and I am just voicing my opinion but here it goes. Beats By Dre. The first issue I would like to address is house they are "fragile" and "break easily". Please, unless you are an absolute idiot, you will not break them. I have had them for a year and a hald (Studios) and never once broke them etc. Also, "it's bad sound quality, people only buy them for the look and name" The sound quality is not THAT bad. There is obviously better and there is also better for a lower price but on to the final point. People complain they are only bought because of the look and brand name but in my opinion, THAT IS REASONABLE! $300 is a lot of money for headphones but hey, people buy earrings for $300. What do earrings do for you? Nothing, they are just jewelry. Beats are also $300 and they are not only stylish but THEY SERVE A PURPOSE. Getting Beats is getting a $300 piece of jewelry that ALSO can provide you with somewhat good sound quality. In my opinion it is more reasonable to buy Beats than a piece of jewelry yet girls don't get hated on for jewelry, please explain that to me. Again, just my two cents and if you made it to the end of this post, Congrats!
The fact that they don't break if people take care of them still doesn't justify the use of somewhat fragile plastics that would normally be used in a headphone that's roughly $50. They're $300, they should have a metal reinforced headband at the most stressed spots.
They cost $300, and the sound is subpar, which you agreed to. Headphones shouldn't be jewelry. Dr. Fritz Sennheiser and Eugene Beyer are probably turning in their graves knowing that the things they created for the benefit of audiophiles are now used by--I'll be nice and say people--to show off. Girls wear necklaces and earrings like they're made to be used. Headphones are made to be used for music, not to dangle around necks.
This
BUT
Others appear to disagree
And you don't have to say people, I think it would be fair to say my/our generation. I am not one of the people who wheres my Beats in public (Perhaps why they haven't broken yet) for the exact reason you mentioned yet that doesn't mean others don't (They Definitely Do). I am trying to speak on behalf of many others and try to explain the logic that some have. This logic is somewhat understandable but again, I do not support it. I am just trying to share a different point of view that some people on this thread may not have looked at this question from.
Fair enough, but I just meant the type of people that do wear them that way. I just don't know how that caught on as a trend. I mean I sometimes wear full sized headphones around my neck when crossing a street or talking to someone, but they're kind of inhibiting otherwise. It's kind of like wearing a heavy scarf all the time. Necklaces are generally light and somewhat discreet (well, moreso than headphones) in contrast to the hugeish Beats. If I could get an explanation as to why people wear them as a necklace...that'd be cool.

I agree with you yet again but here is my best guess about how this caught on. I'm from the generation that started this trend as well so perhaps this is accurate, who knows. I think that the first issue was the fact that they were created with the name Dr. Dre in mind. Even in the advertisements they are advertised as a piece of jewelry as much as they are headphones. A few kids took this to heart and started wearing them around in public. From there people figured "well those other kids with them look cool so I bet I would too". It doesn't help that they were EXTREMELY expensive therefore those who had them were that much "cooler". Kids began to figure that if they saved up and bought them they'd be cool too and be a part of this exclusive club. Unfortunately, the club grew rapidly and now those who DON'T wear them in public are the cool ones. That's my best guess lol, let me know what you think.

Yeah I'm from this generation (I'm 17) too, and I haven't a clue other than probably following trends?
The thing that infuriates me though is when people wear them like:

The sad thing about this hobby though is that $300 doesn't even start to delve in the high end of quality. Heck, $300 is just mid-range stuff.

True, but it's kinda tough because you can't make one person completely change his life because others are going to do as he does. If he was a random person and wore them like that, he would be the only one to wear em like that to this day but just because he is who he is, others do as he does. In the end though I agree, people who do that just look like goons.

What I don't get is that even though Beats may (for some reason) be considered a viable fashion accessory, there are other headphones that do this so much better. If you're looking for something flashy, where do I even begin?

I think headphones can be beautiful, but they have to perform and should never be worn purely as an accessory. If you listen to them, wear them. If you don't, don't wear them. Wearing them and not using them is like wearing saggy pants because they're just a hindrance.

Ultrasones have never struck me as good-looking, save for the Edition 8. They're attractive in an industrial way, sure, but they're too utilitarian to be compared to the TMA-1's (freaking gorgeous in a discreet way) or the ESW10JPN (wood might not be everyone's thing, but Urushi is just amazing). The Ultrasones are in the same league as the Z1000's to me in terms of look.

ESW10JPN:

Edition 8 (If you think Beats are expensive, don't look these up. These are the Limited Edition version that costs I think $2,000.

And I personally love how Grados look, in a hipsterish sense:

Then again, I have weird tastes. For example, I'd probably take a B7 Audi RS4 Avant over a Gallardo.

I love the design of the TMA-1, but the finish has been chipping off mine on the sides of headband where the rubber begins. I would not say I'm obsessive/compulsive about such things since I have no diagnosis, but man, it just drives me crazy. There can be no fingerprints on anything, ever. The rubberized finish gets smudgy, and that's NOT OK.
Grados get me every time. I'd almost call them art-deco or futuristic. When I get some free time, I'm going heavily mod my SR80i. Maybe someday get these.

I'd take a Nissan GT-R over a lot of things, simply because of the practicality and price/performance. Same way I'd take a Thinkpad over any Macbook (people give me so much crap for this. And maybe I do love the Thinkpad's iconic utilitarian styling!). I feel you on that Audi over the Gallardo, but I still am a Lamborghini fan. It was my first word (according to my mom, still don't really believe her.), immediately followed by Maserati. Unfortunately people drive Lambos to compensate for... Ummm... Something... Instead of driving it like a car that fully intends to kill the driver.
