Gears of War 3 Review

Introduction

Gears of War 3 (known to fans as Gears 3) is the third and possibly final instalment of the Gears of War series. Gears of War is an over the shoulder shooter, It may look just like any other shooter game, but its not. Gears of War 3 is totally different from other shooters and has a unique playing style to it. Not only does it have some of the most immersive graphics and weapons, but it has the best finishing moves. It plays just like Gears of War 1 and 2, but with new weapons, finishing moves and characters.

Gameplay

The prologue of the game sees Marcus Fenix and his friend Dominic Santiago, along with the two brothers Antony and Benjamin Carmine trying to save Marcus father. Who is reluctant to go with them because he is trying to save his research because it is important to save Sera (the planet Gears of War is set on). In the end a King-Raven crashes into a building, causing it to collapse, and killing Marcus father.
The game has the player controlling Marcus for a majority of the game, but they can control Augustus Cole-Train Cole in chapters what are happening at the same time as Marcus chapters. The game is split into 5 acts, similar to Shakespeare plays, what have a number of items to find and collect. Often the collectibles are well hidden away from the players view, meaning that the player has to spend time looking for them.

Gears of War 3 introduces a new game mode called Beast mode and a new multiplayer game mode called Team Deathmatch. Beast mode is where you take control of the enemy (Locust) and you try to kill various humans; the stranded, Gears heroes, Onyx Guards and the chairman of the COG (Coalition of Ordered Governments). Team Deathmatch has two teams (Locust and Gears) battling it out to reduce the opposite teams lives to zero and then eliminate the remaining people on their team.
Gears of War 3 contains grown-up humour to entertain the players who have been waiting to play the game for so long. It also has some Easter Eggs referring to previous games and some Easter Eggs what arent related to the game at all. One example of this is where you are on your warship, and it involves you shooting into four pipes and then shooting a chicken. The characters also joke about each other whist fighting the enemies.

Graphics & Sound

The graphics are beautiful and are generally a pleasure to look at. In places there are white patches but this is caused by a slower load than the rest of the scenery, but as soon as you see them they disappear within 2/10ths of a second. The enemies look amazing also, with each on having their own attack with the special ranged ones sometimes looking more spectacular that the landscapes what they are compared to.

The sound quality and music tracks to the game are almost perfect, as they sound absolutely amazing. Each enemy has its own unique battle cry what you can identify them by, even if you cant see them on maps like trenches with its unique sandstorm. The only enemy what doesnt sound good in the Brumak, as its battle cry makes the sound crackle and the same happens when it starts to move. But on the whole it sounds excellent.

Controls

The control scheme for Gears of Way 3 fells just like its predecessors, unique. Even though many of the button and trigger functions are used in many other shooter games and mapped to the same place Gears of War makes the control scheme its own. On no other shooter game have I felt it so easy to pick up the controls and play the game like I have played it for a long time. Even if Gears of War did copy one of the mainstream shooters, like Call of Duty, for its control scheme it still would have felt unique.

Conclusion

Overall Gears of War 3 is an amazing game what any avid shooter fan should own as it has improved on both of the other games in the series. It is also a game what has been highly anticipated for so long and with the delays customers were getting worried that it wouldnt be the best what it could but ended up being highly amazing. The controls are easy to get used to, and they dont need to improved. If there is a game out there what is better than Gears of War 3, I obviously havent played it yet.

Overall I would give this game a 9/10 as it is easily enjoyable and has few flaws what are yet to be patched. If you are thinking of buying this game then you should as I would recommend it to anybody.
