It's like reputation in real life. You get reputation on this site you are more respected/trusted.

Usually the more reputation you have the more respect you get. Also it makes you seem more trusted.

It's to show thanks for the people that helped you, it also makes people look more respected and trusted. However, that is not always true, you should not trust someone just because of their amount of rep.
