I have had an iPhone for quite a while and loved the added features of jailbreaking but i decided to try out the HTC inspire 4g is the root worth the risk?

Sure is, it allows you to use the phone as it was designed. Not as carriers want.

Yes root it for most phones the risk of bricking it is low. with a rooted phone you can do almost anything you want to it even delete the android system files(not recomending that)

Imagine your company HTC, having full root access, adding whatever they want , what they like to the device. Then locking everything up and shipping it to you. Rooting lets you "unlock" what HTC put down and do whatever your heart desires.

The people above haven't really given you a solid answer as regards to 'why' you should root your droid.
The best reason to do it, custom roms.
The process of rooting your phone is very easy. This guide might help. [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]
Once the phone is rooted you can flash a custom rom onto the phone, this is where a world of possibilities opens up.
Let's say for example your phone runs android version 2.3, but you want the new Ice Cream Sandwich F/W, then you don't have to wait for your phone's manufacturer to make it available, you can just download the rom (a quick google search will get you one) then flash it on (plenty of youtube tuts on flashing) and boom you have a new firmware.

On the android marketplace there are apps that are only useable if you have your phone rooted. Like barnacle wifi tethering is FREE tethering and its amazing. stuff like that makes it worth it.
