Hello, I am currently upgrading my computer (ram, CPU and the motherboard), at the moment I have
4gb ram ddr3 kingston
Intel core 2 quad q6600 at 3.0ghz
and the mobo is standard crap
But I'm upgrading to
4gb ram G skill ddr3
intel i5 2500k
and a gigabyte p67a
Will I see better performance in gaming and other tasks ? ( I also have a GPU but i'm not upgrading that - it's a 5850 xtreme

And yes what you're doing is fine, but tbh you shouldn't have such a high end cpu but have a sort of high end gpu. You should go with a lower end AMD cpu and different mobo if you don't want to upgrade the gpu. You can save some money. Or if you still want the 2500k upgrade to a more high end card. That cpu can probably(I'm guessing) a 7990 (when they're released of course, only on an oc though. But if you don't oc any intel cpu then you're a filthy muslim who has just wasted their money).

It's not pointless, G skill ripjaws ram is high performance ram plus it has 297 more mhz, my original was 1333mhz where as the g skill ripjaws is 1600mhz. Thank you all for your input

If you are getting these kind of components, I would assume you are upgrading you operating system to 64bit right?
Otherwise your plan is pointless, 64bit will truly utilize these components. Then at that point the speed of the RAM won't matter either because Windows won't know what to do with it.
I can understand if you only wanted 4gb of RAM because you are running a 32bit system but then why would you waste your money on processing power you can't use.
I'm not trying to be mean if I come across as so, I'm just explaining the nitty gritty to you. So unless you are going to do it right, don't do it at all.

As long as you knew. I would wait till you have enough money for more RAM if you plan on using CPU intensive programs.

Yeah I will be doing that in the future, in the meantime I haven't gone over 4 gbs of ram with programmes and games so the ram is fine for now.
