no, not at all. you shouldn't even allocate 3 gigs you shouldn't even do 2 !! That's a lot of ram to be taking away from your computer. if you wish to play mine craft on the server via that computer you wont be able to because Everything will lag, your best bet is to get a dedicated server from a host or you can learn how to allocate all your ram to the server so you can put a Sql on it or and Ftp on it and you can access it via the computer you use regulary (so a different computer then you allocated 4 gigs). So no, Don't do it.

It is never recommended to use more than half of your PC ram.

Minecraft needs at least 1GB. Plus your Operating system and other applications and processes that are running, needs some too.

I would recommend you using 1.5GB ram for the server, if you are playing on it with the same PC.

If you do that you will overwrite your Operating System as it runs from RAM.
You should get a message telling you this if you try.

People are right to say that you shouldn't as everything else that is ran on your computer will go slow but yes, allocating 4 gigs of ram should be fine as your computes saves a certain amount of ram for your computer to run safely which cant be used by the user
