Tor, if you downloaded the right one, is not a virus. The onion as you say is the tool that is that hides your IP. The browser itself is just a modified version of aurora, a modified version of firefox.

A VPN would mask your IP address, similar to a proxy.
Your Tor setup masks it in a similar way, using information from other Tor users, and any trace would say you're using a proxy, which is probably why he assumed this. You don't have a virus (at least not one causing this), so don't worry.

Mind me asking though, why are you using Tor? I don't really see any need to conceal my identity on the web.
