From what I've read, it's an overall lighter OS than Windows. That's why it runs better on slower or older PC's. Also most programs are written in Linux, Linux is usually a programmers OS though you can do most operations on Windows just fine..

It's really up to you what your needs are, Though I don't know too much about Linux so unless someone on here knows about Linux you are going to get your answer from Google.

We use Linux on all of your servers at my workplace. It's a pretty good system, for advanced users especially.

But there's a popular misconception about Linux... "hard to use".

It's not hard to use once you get used to it. You can make it as complicated as you want or just keep it as you purchased it. There's a lot of tutorials on how to make Linux a lot cooler than windows aswell ( 3D desktop cube, etc )

A big downside, not all programs have Linux versions.

Linux is good for programming and various other advanced things. It is a misconception that Linux is hard to use, but at the same time it is not. What I mean by that is that it is very easy to use at the most basic level, but in order to make use of most of the benefits you must be a pretty advanced user.
