I am letting my friend reflow my JTAG with a heat gun and he has had successful attempts at retails but i don't want him to pop any capacitors or anything. Should I just go for it?

It's a good substitution. It's pretty safe if you do it right.

The thing is, is that I got the JTAGS when they were broken (RROD), and they have just been collecting dust. So i figure, why not try to see if we can fix them? I might need a NAND or XeX though Hey?
