I didn't know where to post this so feel free to move it.
We aim to keep the community safe and I'm making this thread to prevent scams as much as possible. If you want to keep safe and prevent being scammed read on.
Common scams and how to spot them.
Offering over the tops
You may notice people offering higher than the asking price for example you are selling for $50 and someone offers you $60 it can easily mislead you into thinking your getting a better deal.
Lacking proof
Doesn't provide enough information relating to the account for example recoveries/email/lacking proof of account if your buying an account ask them for as much information as possible and meet in game for actual proof same for gold/items.
Fake staff
This is a common scam and happens often "fake e-mail" they say they will use staff and create a fake e-mail for example mine is mp @ hotmail.com they would use mp @ live.com or similar. To avoid this ask the staff on forums.
PayPal
I would stay away from PayPal as much as possible people can dispute the money and 90% of the time win the dispute if they know what there doing and you lose out big time even if they seem trusted and use "gift method" they can still charge back.
PayPal - Essential Read
Other possible payment methods which are safer
Moneybookers Moneybookers.com - Send Money - Receive Money - Online Payments - Money Transfers
Westernunion. Money Transfer | Western Union
I'm super trusted!
Just because someone says they are trusted doesn't mean they are ask for a list of vouches make sure there legit if your still unsure don't sell to them it might save you from being scammed.
How do I prevent being scammed?
The best way to prevent being scammed is ALWAYS use a middleman. If the seller/buyer refuses to use one I would suggest not trading with them, a staff list can be found here Near Reality - Show Groups just send them a pm and say what the trade is they may ask for a small fee but its worth it!
Make a profile of the seller check previous trades and see what other buyers are saying.
Reporting Players
Remember when trading get as much proof as you can the best way is to record it by using Camtasia Studio it can be downloaded here TechSmith | Camtasia Screen Recorder Software, Home screenshots are also useful.
If you are aware of any other scams feel free to send staff a message and some proof of the scam if possible.
The purpose of this thread is to inform buyers and sellers about account related scams, not to discourage purchasing accounts.
Contrary to popular belief, the original account owner can successfully recover their account 90% of the time, without difficulty. A large majority of scam reports involve non-receipt of the account, or recovery of the account at a later time.
Using the tips in this guide and spreading the word to friends will increase your knowledge about account risks.
Important facts to note:
1. Gold Members and high post counted people are just as likely to scam as regular members. Although you will meet many honest people throughout life, there will be people who attempt to deceive you. The internet is no different.
2. Setting recovery questions and/or a registered email address does not safeguard your account from recovery by the original owner. Think about it this way. You've probably bought an account without recoveries before, right? If the recovery questions were removed for sale, they can be removed again once you've changed the info.
3. Even with accurate recovery information, you may be unable to recover the account depending on your geographic location. If the owner was trying to recover an account and you were trying to recover the same account, your request may be denied even if using the same information because it appears to Jagex that you are an outside party.
4. Making a PayPal payment without direct funding from a credit card is unwise when buying accounts. Although it requires more work, ALL PayPal payments (including gifts) can be successfully won by disputing the charge @ the phone number on the back of your Visa/MC card.
Keeping your account:
1. Receive all current and previous account information from the seller. Save it in a safe spot, not on your computer.
2. Confirm that this information is accurate, and only finish the trade if the information is found to be accurate by the results of a Recover Stolen Password request.
3. Request and confirm the seller's phone number. Call it before the trade to ensure it's accurate and keep it with the account info. An honest seller should not reject this.
4. Post count are helpful, but are not necessarily accurate indicators of trust.
5. Take pictures throughout the whole process to ensure your have proof if someone scams or takes it back.
