I believe it is called a ravine.
There somewhat rare and the can spawn anywhere.
You can sometimes even find them in the open.

Thanks. any tips on finding diamond? I want to make a portal and i dont feel like using my iron pick to mine obsidion for 5 minutes a piece.

Well usually if you dig down deep enough and find a cavern, you should find it. It is sometimes by lava, sometimes not.

Most of the time if you find a nice big cave that is low enough that its has lava there is probably a good chance there is diamonds nearby.
There was some trick about being on like the 26th level (I'm not 100% sure it IS the 26th) of blocks from the bottom of the minecraft earth because that's supposed to be the most common level to find them on.

You need a diamond pick for a portal
+ a tip for finding diamonds
press F3 look at the Y
GO to level 10-15 and start mining in a shaft thats 2blocks high and 1block wide ITS CALLED STRIPMINING
