im trying to restore my ipod 3g but my computer is not recognizing it as an ipod help!

Try a different computer if possible or restore iTunes

Is your wire broken? Check and see if it's secure and if there's any kink in the wire.

Step 1.) (With Ipod On) Hold down your power and home button at the same time (Make sure it's plugged into your computer)

Step 2.) Keep holding until The itunes recovery picture show's up... Itunes will pop open saying your ipod has been put in recovery mode,

Step 3.) Hit restore...

is it even connecting to the computer? or it connects but doesn't identify it as an ipod, either way, try a different computer, update itunes, check your wire, and check the connection
