so if the question is 3a+4 when a=9

Well, 3a is the same as 3 x a, which is the same as 3 x 9.

its 31
if a=9 you do 3x9 which is 27 then + 4 which is 31

its simple so you know a is 9 u replace the a with 9 and when the number is next to letter eg. 3a it means you multiply the values so 3x9 and then do the rest hope this helped

Ok so if they are saying a=9 It means every time on the equation you see (a) Sub in the 9ine instead!
Eg:
4a x 5a a=2
That means
4(2) x 5(2)
Then just multiply it out 8 x 10 = 80!
