Console Bans
Q: Why won't my post about a console ban appear on this forum?
A: Any posts regarding console bans will not be answered by the Enforcement Team and will be deleted

Q: How do I tell if my console is banned?
A: Your console is banned if you see the following text when you attempt to log on:

"This console has been banned for violations of the Terms of Use. To protect the Xbox Live service and its

members, Microsoft does not provide details about console bans. There is no recourse for Terms of Use

violations".

Alternatively, if you get the extended status codes from the network troubleshooter and you see that you

have Z:8015-190D, then your console has been banned.

Q: Why did my console get banned?
A: Microsoft does not provide specific details as to why a particular console is banned. Typical reasons include

but are not limited to:

Piracy/Theft

Cheating

Fraud

Phishing

Nudity

Sexually Explicit Material

Account Selling/Account Tampering

Q: I didn't do any of that stuff, my <Friend> did it, can you

unban my console?
A: You are responsible for your account and console. Your console will not be unbanned.

Q: How do I appeal a console ban?
A: There is no appeal for a console ban. Microsoft will not ban a console without

overwhelming evidence that it has been used to violate the Code of Conduct or Terms of Use.

Q: My console was banned, can I get a new console and still play on Xbox LIVE?
A: Yes. Your console was banned but not your gamertag account. This is only as long as your gamertag account is in good standing and hasn't been banned for violations.

Q: Can I use my hard drive from my banned box to a new one?
A: Yes. Normally moving the hard drive to another Xbox will not result in that Xbox being banned, unless it is tampered with or you play illegitimate copies of games on it. You will need to re-download any content (map packs, games, etc) that was purchased legitimately. Anything that was not legit will be forfeited. License Migration Tutorial

Q: I'm trying to transfer my game save from my banned console to my new one but it says it is corrupted?
A: No, you can not save it from the banned console. You will have to start all over.

Q: I didn't receive an email about my console being banned?
A: You won't. Emails are only sent out for gamertag and profile account suspensions.

Q: What happens to my DLC upon console ban?
A: Nothing. If your account has not been banned, you are still able to recover your account onto an unmodified console. This includes accessing your purchased content and your profile, with achievements as it existed prior to the console ban.

However: In the event that your (gamertag profile) account is permanently suspended then all content, licenses and any points on that account at the time of suspension are forfeited.

But it was legally downloaded and paid for: You were denied access to said content legally when you violated the Terms of Use that you agreed to.

Q: Why can't I modify my console, I mean it's mine, I purchased it?
A: You may have purchased the console but MS own the "Intellectual Property" contained within and thus has the right to control modding for the benefit of every community user on Xbox LIVE.

Q: Someone has stolen my account and now I'm banned.
A: You are solely responsible for your account. Your password, access to it, the strength of it, and all your secret question information, are 100% up to you to secure.

Q: What if the store gives me a game before it's release date, will I be banned?
A: If the game is a legitimate copy, you should not be banned.

Q: Why didn't I get a warning or a second chance?
A: You were warned when you read and signed up to register for the Xbox Forums & for Xbox LIVE. There are no second chances.

Q: If I get a local shop to fix my Xbox 360 console, will it get banned?
A: If your console is "repaired" by ANYONE other than the "Official Microsoft Repair Center" then you WILL run the risk of having your console banned. The purpose of this is to protect the "Intellectual Property" contained within that you do not own.

Account Suspension
Q: I did not receive an email about my suspension, what do I do?
A: An email will always be sent to the email address associated with your Windows LIVE ID. If you no longer use that email account or do not have access to it you will have to change it.

Q: If I get into trouble or banned on the Xbox.com Forums, can I get suspended from Xbox LIVE?
A: Yes. The Terms of Use and Code of Conduct apply here on Xbox.com as well as Xbox Live.

Q: How long does it take to get my question answered on the forums?
A: There is no response time for the forum. You may wait 5 minutes, you may wait a few days, it depends on (a) the workload of the team and (b) the nature of your question, especially as it relates to (a).

Q: Why didn't I get a warning or a second chance?
A: You were warned when you read and signed up to register for the Xbox Forums & for Xbox LIVE. There are no second chances.

Q: My temporary Ban is up but I still can't play online?
A: Your ban will end at approximately the same time it was issued but times can fluctuate.

Q: Why I am receiving a Forced Name Change on my gamertag?
A: Your tag, or part of it in some shape way or form is against the Terms Of Use or Code Of Conduct. Since Xbox LIVE is world-wide it may have an offensive definition in another language than it does in your own native language.

Q: Can I get suspended because someone doesn't like me and files a complaint?
A: Nobody will get suspended just because someone alleges someone did something, or if someone is mad
at you and files a complaint. You would not be suspended until we have enough supporting evidence regarding the complaint. Suspensions are only issued based on the review of evidence. In fact, people that abuse the complaint system in this way will most likely get themselves suspended as that is a clear violation
of the Terms of Use.

Q: Can my bad rep get me suspended?
A: Rep factor has no influence on suspensions and/or bans. It is merely Vanity.

General

Q: Why can they mention drugs, racial or illegal things in a game but I can't have them in my profile?
A: Games have ratings such as rated "M" for mature which indicates the content and what age you should be to play said game. However, the Xbox Dashboard, which includes gamertags, profiles, bios, mottos, and locations, is rated "E" for Everyone. That's why there is a difference as to what & where certain content can be
and no it isn't a double-standard.

Q: I have had this Bio and/or gamertag for years, why is it now getting suspended?
A: There is no statute of limitations for the content in your profile.
If you put it in your Profile, you can and will be banned for it, no matter whether it is recent or you have already deleted it, we can still see it.

Q: What do I do if I am getting sexually harassed on Xbox LIVE?
A: You use the Feedback system to: Block the user which will also delete the message
then report them via the Feedback system. If this is not satisfactory then your next step
is to take it up with your local authorities. Microsoft/Xbox will work with the
authorities on the matter once they are brought in.

Q: What do I do if someone threatens or is stalking me?
A: If someone threatens your safety or your life, you need to call your local law enforcement
immediately and involve them. We work with law enforcement agencies to put
people like that in jail.

Q: Why can't I play in Halo matchmaking?
A: If you are not able to play in Halo matchmaking, you would need to talk to Bungie.
That suspension from Halo matchmaking does not have anything to do with us.

Q: Can I get suspended for boosting?
A: "Boosting" can be a different term depending on what game title you are playing.
However, right out of the Code of Conduct:

* Don't intentionally play with someone else who is using unauthorized software or methods in order to help inflate your game rank or gamerscore.

That part about unauthorized software or methods is where you may get into trouble if you are boosting.

What is allowed?

* Boosting means a lot of different things to different people. If it is within the mechanics of the game, and NOT a glitch, we will not enforce against someone that is "boosting". If it exploits a flaw in the game to obtain a material advantage over other players, we would enforce against that. It is subjective, from game to game.

Q: What happens if I send nude pics or use the Xbox LIVE vision cam to
convey sexual material in any way ?
A: Simple. Your account will be permanently suspended with "NO APPEALS"!

Q: A user threatend to hack my account, what do I do?
A: Don't worry about these threats of "hacking". If they DDoS you, we see it, your ISP sees it and
depression will quickly set in for any miscreant doing this. All you need to do is report these threats
via the dashboard using the feedback system.

From: "The Pro" Policy Enforcement Team Member:

If you have a strong password and haven't given any of your information to someone, nobody (and I do mean *nobody*) can "hack" your account.

Q: "It wasn't me!" What is someone was cheating using my account?
A: You should protect your Xbox Live account with the same level of security
that you protect your e-mail account with since you are responsible for your account.
A lot of people don't know this, but you can protect your Xbox Live account with a pass
code that's triggered when you sign into Xbox Live. All you need to do is turn on your Xbox
without a game, go to Account Management, and choose Pass Code.

Q: What do I do if my account is stolen? Phished? Or I Tried to Cheat and was cheated?
A: If you don't have control of that account, you need to call support right now and have them open an unauthorized access investigation. They can determine if this was inappropriate or not and take the correct action.

Q: Why have I been permanently suspended for selecting a bad gamertag?
A: We block most bad gamertags from being created automatically. Sometimes, gamertags are created that bypass our filters. When we see that gamertags contain bad informatio or look like/sound like/hint at inappropriate content, we mark them to be changed prior the next logon. If an account has an excessive number of these changes, we reserve the right to invoke the maximum account punishment, which is permanent suspension of the account and forfeiture of all gamerscore, points, and associated content.
